Wednesdays with Wayne - Curtain Closes on 2016 in Yuma!

Wednesday, November 16, 2016
(Jeff Taylor Photo)(Jeff Taylor Photo) (Bill W) November 16, 2016 – The 2016 season came to an end for Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team last weekend at the Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona.  The Oklahoma City driver finished third in the final Lucas Oil ASCS National Sprint Car standings.  The team is already making preparations for a prospective start in Florida in February.

Things started in Yuma on Friday.  “We were pretty average the first night,” says Wayne.  “We ran second in our heat (from third) and we started third in the Qualifier and finished second.  That put us starting seventh in the feature.”

Wayne would checker seventh.  “We weren’t bad, but we weren’t good either,” he says.  “We were a seventh place car, and that’s where we ran.  I’ve never been really good there.  I can’t seem to get the car as good as it needs to be there in that sand.  I just haven’t figured it out.”

Saturday served as the ASCS finale.  “We drew back in the heat (seventh) and ran fifth,” says Wayne.  “We were able to win the Qualifier from the pole.  On the last two laps, I started getting a vibration.  I thought I was losing a motor, but come to find out, I broke another u-joint.  The boys had to change that for the feature.”

Dodging that bullet, he lined up outside row seven for the main event.  “I think we finished thirteenth,” says Wayne.  “Like I said, we were just average.  We weren’t passing any cars, but we weren’t getting passed either.  We were just kind of maintaining.”

If you are not set on kill, Wayne says Cocopah Speedway can be tricky.  “It can be tough to pass there.  It’s not always racy.  The leaders can put on a show, but back in the pack in dirty air, and it’s hard to get your car to go forward there.”
