Gumout Series

50 cars

Jeremy Campbell (2nd car to time) set his first career quick time with the series. Craig Keel (18th car out) was second quick, followed by Todd Hepfner (17th), Scott Biertzer (4th), Colin Northway (23rd), Tyler Walker (25th), Brian Carlson (37th), Brandon Wimmer (24th), Leonard Lee (14th) and Byron Reed (30th). The track was pretty dry and a good lap consisted of hitting turns one and two high on the cushion and feathering through three and four close to the bottom. Walker’s bid for a $10,000 bonus was thwarted as he didn’t post quick time. Zach Zinn was unable to make time trials or his heat, but would be ready for the B.

Heat one (started): 1. Shane Stewart 8h (1) 2. Lee 16L (2) 3. Campbell 10c (4) 4. Scotty Neitzel 2w (7) 5. Travis Whitney 02 (5) / 6. Steve Meyer 85m (6) 7. Darrell Dodd 11 (11) 8. Charley Osborn 53 (9) 9. Ty Bartz 75 (8) 10. Larry Vandervere 4 (10) 11. Billy Warren 95 (12) 12. Northway 60 (3) 13. Dave York 4Y (13)

York spun on lap two and brought out the caution. On the restart, Whitney and Northway locked bumpers. Northway, who was running third ahead of Whitney caught the worst end of the deal as he was shoved sideways and flipped a couple of times into turn one. Stewart led the distance from the pole. Meyer was very close to passing Whitney after a good battle, but settled one spot out of a transfer.

Heat two (started): 1. Walker 35 (3) 2. Reed 5R (2) 3. Kurt Davis 6 (1) 4. Keel 9 (4) 5. Raymond Hensley 7D (5) / 6. Wayne Johnson 29 (7) 7. Jason Sides 7s (6) 8. Dave Uttech 68 (8) 9. Scott Uttech 7 (11) 10. Howie Gleason 21G (9) 11. Jason Johnson 44 (10) 12. Ryan Irwin 49 (12)

Walker took the lead from Reed at about the midway point after a brief battle, and coasted to the victory. Hensley was crafty in holding off Sides and then a late surge from W. Johnson to nail down the final transfer spot.

Heat three (started): 1. John Haeni 21J (1) 2. Kurt Winker 10w (2) 3. Hepfner 28 (4) 4. Justin Henderson R19 (6) 5. Carlson 18 (3) / 6. Chad Blonde 5x (5) 7. Tom Busch 4BX (7) 8. Dave Enders 51E (9) 9. Scott Young F22 (8) 10. Craig Lager 3c (10) 11. Dean Erfurth 98 (12) 12. Robert Bell 71x (11)

Haeni led from flag to flag in a mostly single file affair.

Heat four (started): 1. Kim Mock 1m (1) 2. Mike Reinke 17 (2) 3. Curt Trainer 36 (6) 4. Bob Bennett 3 (7) 5. Tim Vandervere 7v (5) / 6. Biertzer 4B (4) 7. Wimmer 7TW (3) 8. Brian Kristan 5 (8) 9. Curt Grant 36G (9) 10. Jereme Schroeder 43 (10) 11. Dave Maynard 72 (12) 12. Mike Ptasienski 78 (11) DNS – Zinn 32z

Mock led most of the way, with Reinke trying in vain to get around him on the high side, only to get cut off each time. Bennett stormed forward after a lap two spin by Ptasienski who would drop out later. A white flag spin by Maynard also brought out yellow.

C main (started): 1. J. Johnson (2) 2. Dodd (5) / 3. L. Vandervere (1) 4. Lager (3) 5. S. Uttech (6) 6. Schroeder (4) 7. Irwin (10) 8. Warren (9) 9. Erfurth (11) 10. Bell (7) 11. Maynard (12) 12. Ptasienski (8) 13. York (13) 14. Zinn (14)

The first lap was a disaster as contact between Bell and Ptasienski resulted in them stopping in turn three. Zinn, trying to avoid the incident, flipped out of the park, but was uninjured. J. Johnson took control on the restart and pulled away from the rest, while Dodd did an excellent job of moving around on the high side into the last transfer to the B.

Dash one (started): 1. Stewart (1) 2. Haeni (2) 3. Winker (4) 4. Lee (3) 5. Campbell (5) 6. Hepfner (6)

Stewart was gone in a single file affair, setting up a duel with Walker in an A that would never happen.

Dash two (started): 1. Walker (1) 2. Mock (2) 3. Reed (3) 4. Reinke (4) 5. Keel (5) 6. Vandervere (6)

See Dash one.

B main (started): 1. Sides (4) 2. Blonde (2) 3. Meyer (5) 4. Biertzer (1) / 5. Busch (6) 6. Wimmer (3) 7. Kristan (10) 8. Young (11) 9. D. Uttech (8) 10. Enders (15) 11. Bartz (9) 12. Osborn (13) 13. Dodd (16) 14. J. Johnson (17) 15. Gleason (12) 16. Grant (14) 17. W. Johnson (7) DNS – Northway

Sides passed race-long leader Blonde on the final circuit. Wimmer was running fourth with two to go when he performed a 360 spin. He lost several positions, but kept running. Grant brought out the only caution with a lap two spin. W. Johnson exited after electing to start in the rear and take a provisional for the A. The rains came just before the A and the show will not be made up.

MSA Race of Champions (started): 1. KJ Skelton 80 (1) 2. Lance Fossbender 7 (3) 3. David O’Neill (8) 4. Joe Wipperfurth 2 (10) 5. Troy Wondra 35th (9) 6. Troy Hepfner 82 (2) 7. Frank Firari 27 (11) 8. Jerry Ski 00 (4) 9. Danny Schlafer 25 (7) 10. Tim Haddy 21H (12) 11. Kurt Davis 6K (6) 12. Doug Schenck 71s (5)

Hepfner and K. Davis were running second and third on lap three when they came together. Ski who was running fourth was collected as well. Ski would restart, as would Hepfner without his nose wing. In a separate incident, Schenck tipped over and retired. The white flag lap created excitement as Schlafer lost his nose wing bringing out a shootout. After the restart, Hepfner had come through the pack and was making a bid to pass Wondra for fourth, when Wipperfurth passed them both on the low side in a close one. Skelton led the distance.
