(Bill W) June 30, 2015 – Win #59 at the Huset’s Speedway last Sunday night has the Jimco Motorsports #13 team ready for a big weekend of racing. Two $5,000 to win shows will be contested at Huset’s over the Fourth of July weekend. The FVP National Sprint League will invade Huset’s on Friday and Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. Sunday, the team will be back at Huset’s for another $5,000 special event.
The Grand Forks, North Dakota driver timed in eighth quick at Huset’s Sunday night. “We didn’t qualify the best,” says Mark. “The track was really dry. You know it’s dry when you see me qualifying on the bottom in three and four.”
The heat race was entertaining. Mark would win in a thrilling finish after starting fourth. “We had a good battle,” he says. “We were able to get to second. Jordyn Brazier was leading it. We got racing heavy, and the white flag came. I was just about ready to slide in front of him, when Ian Madsen slid by us both. I shot to the bottom of turn two and slid back by him for the win. That was pretty spectacular!”
He would start outside of row one for the feature. “Lynton Jeffrey was running a fast pace early,” says Mark. “We were slid in the first corner and that put us in third. Ian Madsen was running second, and we kind of chased him down. It took me about five laps to get rolling, but the car was working well then.”
Mark would complete a harrowing move to take the lead. “We were able to slide in front of Ian for second,” he says. “We started running down Lynton. He got to the lapped cars and moved down from the cushion about one car length. It was just enough that I could wedge it between him and the wall. I was running the cushion pretty hard. He moved off the cushion a little bit and somehow I got between him and the concrete.”
He would take off from there. “Once we were out front, we were really good,” says Mark. “I came up on some lapped cars that looked like they were racing for the win. I got a little patient with them and let the others catch me a little bit. Once we got by them, we were o.k.”
The conditions were dry. “Apparently, they’ve forgotten the water truck at some of these racetracks,” says Mark. “Luckily, it started to rubber, but it was at the very end. Another five laps, and we would have been to the freight train around the bottom stage.”
Knoxville Raceway also offered up a dry track Saturday. After qualifying 20th, it was a long night for the team that ended in an 18th place finish. “All I really have to say about Knoxville last Saturday is we jumped on the ‘struggle bus’ early and never got off!” says Mark. “We weren’t very good. We were trying to find speed and filled up the wrong cup or something. We’ll give it another shot this weekend.”
