WoO

46 cars

Cars were assigned into two flights of time trials.  Logan Schuchart (13th car out to time in group one) set the overall quick time at 10.705 seconds over the quarter-mile.  Carson Macedo (11th car out) was second quick in that group, followed by Kasey Kahne (10th), David Gravel (17th) and James McFadden (3rd).  Donny Schatz (7th car out in group two) was quick in the second group, followed by Buddy Kofoid (2nd), Spencer Bayston (13th), Brad Sweet (6th) and Sheldon Haudenschild (9th).  Jacob Allen was sixth quick in the second group, but was disqualified after being light one pound at the scales.

Heat one (started): 1. Kahne 9 (2) 2. Schuchart 1s (1) 3. McFadden 83 (3) 4. Brooke Tatnell 16 (4) 5. Paige Polyak 19 (6) / 6. Robbie Price 7s (5) 7. Jack Dover 81 (8) 8. Brendan Mullen 11m (7) 9. Thomas Kennedy 21K (10) 10. Jody Rosenboom (9) 11. Jack Croaker 8B (11) 12. Elliot Amdahl 51A (12)

8 lap heats took the top five to the feature, and the top two to the Dash.  With a mind towards four straight nights of racing on the track, and trying to restrict tire wear, plenty of water was used.  This allowed for a fast track that didn’t see much passing on the night until lapped traffic played a part.  Price came the closest to making a pass for the final transfer, but Paige held on.

Heat two (started): 1. Macedo 41 (1) 2. Gravel 2 (2) 3. Gio Scelzi 18 (3) 4. Parker Price-Miller 11P (5) 5. Justin Henderson 7 (4) / 6. Tim Shaffer 3K (7) 7. Cody Hansen 4 (9) 8. Dusty Zomer ACE (6) 9. Kaleb Johnson 22K (8) 10. Brant O’Banion 47 (10) 11. Alan Gilbertson 97 (11)

Most moves in the heats were made in turn one, and that’s where PPM picked up a spot.  Macedo led the distance.

Heat three (started): 1. Schatz 15 (1) 2. Bayston 5 (2) 3. Haudenschild 17 (3) 4. Brian Brown 21 (5) 5. Jacob Allen 1a (12) / 6. JJ Hickle 25 (9) 7. Mark Dobmeier 13 (8) 8. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (6) 9. Noah Gass 20G (10) 10. Matt Juhl 09 (7) 11. Brock Zearfoss 3z (4) 12. Chuck McGillivray 101 (11)

Haudenschild drifted up the track on the frontstretch, catching Zearfoss with his right rear and sending the 3z tumbling.  Brock was uninjured.  Haudenschild would suffer severe right rear shock damage, meaning he would go without.  Juhl, McGillivray, Dobmeier and Hafertepe were also involved in the messy accident.  Dobmeier, Hafertepe and Haudenschild restarted.  Haudenschild restarted at the rear, and from my angle in turn four had a nice jump on the green, getting by several cars, going from ninth to third by turn two, and hanging on the bottom without his right rear shock.  The incident was all a blessing for Allen after his DQ.  Restarting sixth (instead of his original spot outside row six), he garnered the last transfer after Gass stopped to bring a caution later in the race.  All were cheering Haud’s heroics but presumably Zearfoss and the cars passed in turn four on the restart.

Heat four (started): 1. Kofoid 11 (1) 2. Sweet 49 (2) 3. Rico Abreu 24 (3) 4. Aaron Reutzel 8 (4) 5. Ayrton Gennetten 3 (5) / 6. Carson McCarl 27 (8) 7. Marcus Dumesny 1AU (7) 8. Austin McCarl 88 (6) 9. Riley Goodno 22 (9) 10. Lee Goos Jr. 17G (10) 11. Kevin Ingle 2K (11)

Kofoid looked impressive in the Indy Race Parts ride in his first venture at Huset’s with a wing.  Goos Jr., who has three career 360 wins and two with a 305 at Huset’s was making his maiden voyage in a 410.

C main (started): 1. Kennedy (1) 2. Johnson (2) / 3. Goodno (3) 4. Rosenboom (4) 5. Goos Jr. (5) 6. Gilbertson (9) 7. Ingle (8) 8. Croaker (7) 9. O’Banion (6) DNS – Gass, Juhl, McGillivray, Amdahl

10 laps was the distance, the top two transferred to the B.  The track was widening, but still single-file without the lappers.

Dash (started): 1. Kahne (1) 2. Kofoid (3) 3. Bayston (2) 4. Gravel (6) 5. Schuchart (4) 6. Macedo (5) 7. Schatz (7) 8. Sweet (8)

6 laps, determined the top eight starting spots in the feature.  Kofoid used a strong move to get by Bayston on lap one and chased Kahne the rest of the way.

B main (started): 1. Price (1) 2. Shaffer (2) 3. Hickle (3) 4. C. McCarl (5) / 5. Dover (4) 6. Hafertepe (10) 7. Dobmeier (7) 8. Dumesny (8) 9. Zomer (9) 10. Kennedy (12) 11. Zearfoss (11) 12. Hansen (6) 13. Johnson (13) DNS – Mullen, A. McCarl

Price left the rest behind in this one, clearly looking comfortable on the quarter-mile which may have reminded him of Skagit where he was track champ.  Shaffer rolled second in his first night in the Lunstra car, Hickle rebounded from a ground pounder in Beaver Dam a week ago, and C. McCarl made a slick move on Dover on lap one to garner the final transfer.

A main (started): 1. Bayston (3) 2. Macedo (6) 3. Kahne (1) 4. Kofoid (2) 5. McFadden (9) 6. Schatz (7) 7. Sweet (8) 8. Schuchart (5) 9. Haudenschild (10) 10. Scelzi (11) 11. Reutzel (15) 12. Abreu (12) 13. Allen (17) 14. Tatnell (13) 15. Price-Miller (14) 16. Gennetten (18) 17. Polyak (16) 18. Price (19) 19. Hicke (21) 20. Gravel (4) 21. Shaffer (20) 22. C. McCarl (22) 23. Brown (23) DNS – Henderson

30 laps, $10,000 to win.  The WoO’s new one-tire a night rule escaped Henderson, who was notified after staging on the track that he didn’t have his marked tire from earlier in the night.  He was not allowed to start.  Brown elected for the tail and pulled off after the green.  Kahne stormed out to the early lead over Kofoid, Bayston, Gravel and Schuchart.  Kofoid gained on Kahne who saw lapped traffic ahead on lap seven, and then Buddy jumped the turn three cushion on lap eight, allowing Bayston and Gravel by.  Gravel passed Bayston for second on lap ten.  Macedo shot by Kofoid for fourth on lap 13.  Gravel reeled in Kahne and passed him high in turn three for the point on lap 17.  A lap later, he would try to squeeze between a lapper and the frontstretch wall and lose.  He climbed the wall and tipped over.  He was ok, but done after a gallant effort in the work area.  Kahne reassumed the lead and chose the inside line on the double-file restart, ahead of Macedo, Bayston Kofoid, Schuchart and McFadden.  Bayston worked his way into second, passed Kahne briefly during lap 25, and shot by him for the lead with four to go.  Macedo gained second from Kahne with three to go.  Bayston was back in lapped traffic on the white flag lap, but held on for his second WoO win of the season.
