Huset’s High Bank Nationals Night #1

WoO

49 cars

Cars were split into two groups of qualifying.  The feature would be set by combined points between qualifying and heats.  Total points for the night will be added to night #2 to construct Saturday’s lineups for the $100,000 to win finale.  Wednesday night’s winner, Spencer Bayston (1st car out to time), set quick time in Group A on the quarter-mile at 10.882 seconds.  David Gravel (6th car out) was second quick, followed by Carson Macedo (23rd), Sheldon Haudenschild (18th) and Matt Juhl (14th).  Gio Scelzi (1st car out) set the standard in Group B at 11.006 seconds.  Robbie Price (15th car out) was second quick, followed by Buddy Kofoid (4th), James McFadden (14th) and Brock Zearfoss (17th).  Group A made up heats 1-3, and Group B 4-6.  The track was much drier than the previous night, thanks to hotter weather and more wind.

Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Logan Schuchart 1s (1*) 2. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (3*) 3. JJ Hickle 25 (2*) 4. Brad Sweet 49 (4*) 5. Haudenschild (5) 6. Marcus Dumesny 1AU (7) 7. Bayston 5 (6) 8. Carson McCarl 27 (8) 9. Matt Wasmund 4w (9)

Heats were 10 laps, and had an invert of 6.  Finish points were added to qualifying points.  The top eight point-getters drew for their feature starting spots, and the top 20 locked into the A.  Schuchart led the distance.  Hickle and Hafertepe had a good battle for second before Sam took it on lap three.  Sweet and Haudenschild also battled for fourth, with Sweet finally getting by with two to go.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Mitchel Moles 19AZ (2*) 2. Kaleb Johnson 22K (1) 3. Juhl 09 (5*) 4. Gravel 2 (6*) 5. Donny Schatz 15 (4) 6. Kasey Kahne 9 (7) 7. Dusty Zomer ACE (3) 8. Tim Shaffer 3K (8)

Johnson led Moles, Juhl and Zomer early.  Moles battled with the leader and took the point on lap two, while Zomer took third from Juhl.  Juhl returned the favor a lap later in a good duel.  On lap six, Gravel passed Zomer for fourth.  Schatz didn’t enter the top five after a slow start until lap nine.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Brooke Tatnell 16 (1*) 2. Jacob Allen 1a (4*) 3. Parker Price-Miller 11P (5*) 4. Macedo 41 (6*) 5. Paige Polyak 19 (2) 6. Brian Brown 21 (3) 7. Brendan Mullen 11m (7) 8. Cody Hansen 4 (8)

Tatnell led wire to wire.  Polyak trailed in second much of the way.  On lap three, Allen, Price-Miller and Brown were three-wide for third, and came out in that order.  Macedo entered the top five on lap four.  Allen tracked down Polyak and passed her with two to go for second.  Paige would hit the infield berm in turn three and lose serious momentum down the stretch, surrendering spots to PPM and Macedo.

Heat four (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Austin McCarl 88 (1*) 2. McFadden 83 (5*) 3. Rico Abreu 24 (3*) 4. Scelzi 18 (6*) 5. Noah Gass 20G (4) 6. Elliot Amdahl 51A (2) 7. Alan Gilbertson 97 (7) 8. Lee Goos Jr. 17G (8)

McCarl led the distance.  Gass followed in second.  McFadden worked up from fifth to pass Abreu for third on lap two, and then took second from Gass three laps later.  Abreu and Gass dueled for third before Rico took it on lap six.  Scelzi followed him into fourth.

Heat five (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Hunter Schuerenberg 55 (4*) 2. Jack Dover 81 (1) 3. Zearfoss 3z (5*) 4. Skylar Prochaska 35 (2) 5. Riley Goodno 22 (7) 6. Jack Croaker 8B (3) 7. Chuck McGillivray 101 (6) 8. Price 7s (8)

Price was docked a row for being late to get in the track.  Dover set the pace early over Prochaska and Schuerenberg.  Schuerenberg gained second from Prochaska on lap two, and Zearfoss followed him into third on lap three.  Dover was strong, but Schuerenberg reeled him in and passed him for the lead coming for the white flag.

Heat six (started): 1. Mark Dobmeier 13 (1*) 2. Thomas Kennedy 21K (2*) 3. Kofoid 11 (6*) 4. Ayrton Gennetten 3 (3) 5. Justin Henderson 7 (4) 6. Aaron Reutzel 8 (5) 7. Brant O’Banion 47 (7) 8. Kevin Ingle 2K (8)

Dobmeier led wire to wire with Kennedy in tow.  Reutzel spun while running sixth two laps in after Kofoid moved into fifth.  Kofoid used a slider to get by Henderson for fourth on lap six, and took third from Gennetten on the last lap.

C main (started): 1. Mullen (1) 2. C. McCarl (4) / 3. O’Banion (2) 4. Shaffer (6) 5. McGillivray (3) 6. Goos Jr. (5) 7. Wasmund (9) 8. Hansen (7) 9. Ingle (8)

The 10-lap C took the top two to the B.  C. McCarl jumped into the second and final transfer right away.  O’Banion grabbed third from McGillivray on lap two, and Shaffer, who was struggling gained fourth on the last lap.

B main (started): 1. Bayston (1) 2. Price (2) 3. Haudenschild (3) 4. Schatz (8) / 5. K. Johnson (4) 6. Gass (6) 7. Reutzel (11) 8. Dumesny (18) 9. Dover (5) 10. Henderson (9) 11. Goodno (16) 12. Kahne (19) 13. Prochaska (10) 14. Polyak (12) 15. Mullen (21) 16. C. McCarl (22) 17. Brown (14) 18. Gennetten (7) 19. Croaker (13) 20. Amdahl (15) 21. Gilbertson (20) 22. Zomer (17)

The 12-lapper took the top four to the A.  Bayston shot out to a lead, ahead of Price, Haudenschild and Johnson.  The leaders entered lapped traffic on lap six before Gennetten spun on the backstretch a circuit later. Gass moved by Dover for fifth, while all eyes were on Schatz, who gained sixth on the restart.  Haudenschild and Price traded second in good racing.  With two to go, Schatz was in fifth and coming for the white flag, he edged in front of Johnson for the final transfer.

A main (started): 1. Kofoid (2) 2. McFadden (5) 3. Price-Miller (6) 4. Zearfoss (1) 5. Schuerenberg (4) 6. Gravel (9) 7. Haudenschild (23) 8. Scelzi (7) 9. Schuchart (13) 10. Macedo (11) 11. Abreu (14) 12. Allen (8) 13. Hafertepe (10) 14. Sweet (16) 15. A. McCarl (15) 16. Juhl (3) 17. Bayston (21) 18. Schatz (24) 19. Tatnell (17) 20. Hickle (20) 21. Moles (12) 22. Dobmeier (19) 23. Kennedy (18) 24. Price (22)

The 35-lapper began with a melee on the backstretch.  Sweet was in contact with another car, spun and collected several cars including Kennedy and Schatz who both got upside down.  Price, Hickle and Dobmeier were also involved.  Only Price and Kennedy retired.  Schatz and Sweet made serious rebuilds in the work area to restart at the tail.  The rest of the way went non-stop.  Zearfoss jumped out to an early lead over Kofoid, Schuerenberg, Juhl and McFadden.  McFadden gained fourth from Juhl on lap three, while Kofoid was all over Zearfoss.  Buddy would take the point on lap four, was in lapped traffic by lap eight, and was out of sight the rest of the way for his first ever WoO win.  Around lap ten, McFadden got by Schuerenberg and Zearfoss to move into second.  Price-Miller had the bottom working in a climb to fourth by lap ten.  PPM worked by Schuerenberg for fourth with seven to go, and got Zearfoss for third coming to the white flag.  Haudenschild passed 16 cars in route to seventh from 23rd.
