50th Anniversary Knoxville Nationals Night #2

50 cars

Steve Kinser (8th car out to time) set quick time at 15.239 seconds on a quickly drying racetrack. Danny Lasoski (19th car out) was second quick, followed by Greg Hodnett (6th), Daryn Pittman (1st), Brian Brown (25th), Dusty Zomer (3rd), Donny Schatz (27th), Ian Madsen (24th), Keith Bloom Jr. (4th) and Sammy Swindell (50th).

Heat one (started): 1. Ricky Logan 10a (2) 2. Stevie Smith 1z (3) 3. Kinser 11 (8) 4. Clint Garner 40 (1) / 5. Scott Winters 23w (5) 6. Jonathan Cornell 28 (9) 7. Brent Antill 81 (4) 8. Zomer 91 (7) / 9. Matt Wasmund 4w (10) 10. Tim Kaeding 83JR (6)

Logan shot out to an early lead in the 8-lapper. The top four finishers went to the A, next four to the B, and last two to the C. Smith and Garner battled over second, while Kinser moved up nicely into the top four. On lap seven, Wasmund came to a stop, bringing out the caution. Logan led Smith, Garner, Kinser and Winters back to green. Kaeding would exit with motor issues the next lap. Kinser powered by Garner on the restart to claim third.

Heat two (started): 1. Dale Blaney 2B (6) 2. Schatz 15 (7) 3. Dean Jacobs 97x (2) 4. Chad Meyer 4H (5) / 5. Jim Moughan Jr. 1mx (1) 6. Toni Lutar 4x (4) 7. Brooke Tatnell 59 (3) 8. Greg Nikitenko 6N (10) / 9. Chris Shirek 1K (9) 10. Lasoski 6 (8)

D. Jacobs led early. Lasoski was moving up, but came to a stop with motor issues with two laps in the books. The restart saw D. Jacobs ahead of Blaney, Schatz, Tatnell and Moughan. Blaney passed D. Jacobs on the restart for the lead, while Moughan moved around Tatnell using the cushion to take the last transfer spot. Meyer was on the move as well, circling Tatnell and then getting by Moughan for fourth while coming to the white flag. Schatz worked his way up well too.

Heat three (started): 1. Lance Dewease 30c (3) 2. Hodnett 22 (8) 3. Rager Phillips 10 (1) 4. Skip Jackson 2 (6) / 5. Robby Wolfgang 7K (2) 6. Madsen 55 (7) 7. Kaley Gharst 44G (5) 8. Mitchell Dumesny 77AU (4) / 9. Lee Jacobs 24H (10) 10. Jared Ridge 12x (9)

Phillips took off in the lead with Dewease in pursuit. The pair exchanged the lead several times. Dewease on lap three, Phillips on lap four, and Dewease took it back for good on lap five. Hodnett was the man on the move, and Jackson won the last spot from Wolfgang in a good race.

Heat four (started): 1. Jac Haudenschild R19 (4) 2. Pittman 13x (8) 3. Mark Shirshekan 3x (1) 4. Mike Moore 69 (3) / 5. Bloom Jr. 27 (7) 6. Todd King 97 (10) 7. Paul Jeffrey 12AU (2) 8. Paul McMahan 91x (6) / 9. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (5) 10. Greg Wilson w20 (9)

Before a lap could be completed, Hafertepe Jr. spun in turn two and collected Wilson. Wilson was done, but Hafertepe went to the welder and made repairs for the C. Haudenschild led early, while McMahan moved up nicely into the top four. Disaster would strike McMahan on lap four when his right rear tire came apart and he flipped wildly in turn four. He was uninjured as the crew went to work rebuilding for the B. The wreck was reminiscent of Bob Weuve the night before when he had something break in turn three. The restart saw Haud leading Shirshekan, PIttman, Moore and Bloom Jr. Pittman slid under Shirshekan to secure second after the green fell.

Heat five (started): 1. Swindell 1s (7) 2. Luke Hall 34 (1) 3. Brown 21 (8) 4. Seth Brahmer 13v (3) / 5. Josh Schneiderman 49 (5) 6. Tyler Walker 17 (6) 7. Dustin Morgan 93 (9) 8. Austen Wheatley 44w (4) / 9. Bill Rose 6x (2) 10. Kim Mock 23 (10)

Hall set the early pace, while Swindell and Brown started moving forward. A lone caution came out with eight in the books when Nikitenko stopped. The restart saw Hall ahead of Swindell, Brown, Brahmer, Schneiderman and Walker. Swindell took the lead and led the last two laps after the restart.

C main (started): 1. Lasoski (1) 2. Kaeding (2) / 3. Hafertepe Jr. (3) 4. L. Jacobs (7) 5. Shirek (5) 6. Rose (4) 7. Ridge (6) 8. Wasmund (8) 9. Mock (9) DNS - Wilson

Lasoski led the first two laps before a Wasmund spin slowed things. He checked out after the restart in the 8-lapper. Kaeding and Hafertepe Jr. went back and forth for second and final transfer before Kaeding took command.

B main (started): 1. Madsen (2) 2. McMahan (4) 3. Zomer (1) 4. Schneiderman (8) / 5. Walker (5) 6. Kaeding (22) 7. Winters (6) 8. Tatnell (13) 9. Cornell (17) 10. Mi. Dumesny (11) 11. Bloom Jr. (3) 12. Lasoski (21) 13. Gharst (7) 14. Lutar (10) 15. Antill (9) 16. Morgan (18) 17. Wheatley (12) 18. King (20) 19. Wolfgang (14) 20. Moughan (16) 21. Nikitenko (19) 22. P. Jeffrey (15)

Zomer shot out to the early lead in the 12-lapper from the pole. Madsen took second, while McMahan rode third ahead of Schneiderman and Bloom Jr. A Wolfgang spin on lap eight closed things up, and Madsen shot under Zomer for the lead. McMahan followed suit. The real race was for the final transfer. Schneiderman and Walker traded the spot until the last corner. Schneiderman rode the cushion to the position, after a failed attempt was made across the track by Walker. Contact was made by the two in the side-by-side battle for the spot.

A main (started): 1. Swindell (3) 2. Brown (5) 3. Jackson (1) 4. Smith (11) 5. Schatz (4) 6. Blaney (2) 7. McMahan (22) 8. Zomer (21) 9. Hodnett (7) 10. Pittman (6) 11. S. Kinser (8) 12. Haudenschild (10) 13. Schneiderman (23) 14. Dewease (12) 15. D. Jacobs (16) 16. Logan (15) 17. Phillips (18) 18. Garner (17) 19. Brahmer (14) 20. Meyer (9) 21. Shirshekan (19) 22. Moore (13) 23. Hall (20) DNS - Madsen

Three tries were needed to get the A main rolling. Shirshekan spun on the first try, and Hall flipped into the turn one fence. No one was hurt. Madsen was credited with 24th for point purposes after motor trouble following the B. Swindell took the early lead from Jackson in the 25-lapper. Action was instense, as Schatz quickly moved into third and then second behind Swindell in traffic. Jackson held down a steady third, while Brown was moving his way into the top five. Another charger was Smith, who had moved up from row six to fifth. The race went non-stop for 24 3/4 laps, when Moore came to a halt. Swindell led Schatz, Jackson, Brown and Smith back to green. Smith was able to get by Brown for fourth, before Moore spun on another white flag lap. Schatz had a right rear tire in second that was noticeably flat. It cost him on the last restart as Jackson zoomed by him, and Brown circled both Smith and Jackson to move into second at the finish. Jackson gave the locals two cars on the podium. The win was Sammy's 45th 410 win at Knoxville and worth $12,000. McMahan was the hard-charger, moving up 15 spots.
