(Bill W) April 14, 2017 – Sixteen-year-old Bailey Goldesberry is getting her 2017 season in swing.  The family sprint car team has a 360 engine for select events this season, and their first outing with the Sprint Invaders at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa went well.  This weekend, the Springfield, Illinois driver hopes to make two 305 events.  Tonight, she will run at Jacksonville Speedway in Illinois, and tomorrow she’ll return to 34 Raceway.

The event with the Sprint Invaders took place on April 1.  “It was fast and it was fun,” says Bailey of her first night in a 360.  “I enjoyed racing with some new drivers.  We definitely learned some things about the 360 as compared to the 305.  It had a lot more ‘get up and go’!  It was a lot faster.  It was definitely more responsive!”

Bailey finished fifth in her heat, one spot out of locking herself in the main event.  She turned heads in the B main, however.  “We ended up finishing second in the B,” she says.  “I led for all but about five laps.  At that point, Ben Wagoner got by us.  Chris Martin was last year’s champion with the Sprint Invaders and he was able to get by me briefly there, but we were able to stick it on the cushion there in one and two and shoot back around him for second.”

She lined up in row ten for the feature.  “We were really good to start with,” says Bailey.  “I was able to get in my groove.  Then we had a long yellow, and something happened with the tires.  We just weren’t as good after that.”

The heavy and rough conditions of the track were a result of several inches of rain during the week.  Bailey held on though.  “The track was a little rougher than we thought it would be,” she says.  “We had the car really tight and we ended up finishing 18th.  Overall, it was a good experience for our first time in a 360.”

This is Bailey’s second year in sprint cars.  Last year, she finished 13th in points at 34 Raceway despite missing the first five nights.  She also picked up a win in Quincy.  The team plans adding several more 360 events to their schedule.  “We have eight or ten races on our schedule this year with the 360,” she says.  “Hopefully, tonight will be a good night for us in the 305 at Jacksonville, and we’re looking forward to getting up to Burlington tomorrow night.”
