Trucking at Badlands (Jeff Bylsma Photo) (Bill W) May 16, 2017 – Mark Dobmeier and the Jimco Racing/Polaris #13 carried all the silver back to North Dakota again!  The Grand Forks native won the Folkens Bros. Trucking “Silver Shootout” for the second year in a row at Badlands Motor Speedway south of Brandon, South Dakota Saturday night.  Their torrid pace as of late was also evident with a strong third place finish at the Spring Nationals in Minnesota at Jackson Motorplex Friday.  The team plans on running their hometown River Cities Speedway this Friday.

Friday at Jackson, things picked up where they left off when Mark charged to a top five finish at Knoxville a week ago Saturday.  “We have the big track stuff going well,” he says.  “We just have a great combination right now with our EMi chassis and our Speedway engine.  I didn’t know what the format was at Jackson.  I just go wherever they tell me.  It ended up being an All Stars type format.  We were able to set quick time in our group.  We had been fast in hot laps, and made some small adjustments from there.”

He started fourth in his heat.  “We were running a solid second there early,” says Mark.  “We were able to run Lynton Jeffrey down and pass him on the bottom, which normally isn’t my style.  But it was working for us, and it was a really solid heat race.”

The top six redrew for their feature positions, and as luck would have it, Mark drew the six.  “The draw goes well unless I touch the pill, which I did,” he jokes.  “We were able to get a good jump early on and got up to second.  I felt we were in contention.  We could stay with (leader) Kerry (Madsen), but we were going to need lapped traffic to mix things up.  It was kind of one-lane on the top.  When the lapped cars came, I bobbled and that allowed Aaron Reutzel to slip by me.  We almost got him back at the end, but had a nice third place finish.”

The big bucks were on the line Saturday night in the form of silver at Badlands.  “We drew a late pill for qualifying,” says Mark.  “The track did go away a bit and we ended up being fourth quick.  We ran a good heat.  We started third and pulled up to second.”

The feature redraw went much better than it had at Jackson.  “We had a kid draw the pill for us, and he drew the pole,” says Mark.  “To be honest, I’m not big on starting on the pole.  I’d rather have a carrot to chase and search the track out.  Being up front can be kind of nerve-wracking.”

Mark shot into the lead early in what would turn into a great race.  “We were able to get rolling right away,” he says.  “My hat’s off to the track crew.  For being the first race of the season, and such a big race, they had an awesome surface.  We were cruising the cushion up on the wall, and at one point, I saw Reutzel on the bottom.  So I moved to the bottom in three and four and the top of one and two.  That was working.”

That’s until the caution came out.  “(Tim) Kaeding was able to get by me on the restart when I went to the bottom,” says Mark.  “He led for five or six laps there, but we were able to track him back down and pass him on the bottom.  Once we got the lead for the last time, we just got up top and bounced off the walls the rest of the way.  It was your typical ‘Huset’s-shave your bead locks off on the walls’ sort of race.  It was really exciting to win that one again!”
