Mark says the draw didn’t start well.  “We drew the very last pill in qualifying.  My drawing skills were up to par.  We qualified seventh in our group, which was o.k. for where we went out.”

Lining up fourth in his heat, he wanted to finish in the top two and lock into the Dash.
“I felt we had a great car,” says Mark.  “We got going and got into third right away.  We chased down Joey Saldana.  We were definitely faster.  He definitely had ears on his car, because wherever my motor made noise, his car got wide in that direction.  He was making his car really wide, and it was a shame, because second is a critical spot that puts you in the Dash.  Apparently, he wanted it as badly as us.”

The third-place finish put Mark outside the fifth row for a main event that would go late into the night.  “The feature was long and interesting,” he says.  “We got four laps in when Jacob Allen crashed.  We were up to eighth at that point, and the rain came down.  We had a downpour from twenty to thirty minutes, and it was a few hours before we ran again.”

Obviously, the track had taken a lot of moisture by the time the green fell again.
“The track was extremely heavy,” says Mark.  “It was really one-lane around the bottom.  It was like a rubber-down track, only because of the stickiness of the track.  We were up to seventh at one point.  I bicycled and lost a couple spots.  We ended up ninth at the end of it.”

He talked about the team’s plan for this week.  “We’re planning on Ada, Minnesota on Thursday with NOSA, and Jackson (Minnesota) on Friday.  Saturday is up in the air depending on weather.  It will either be Knoxville (Iowa), or River Cities has a special fair race.”
