(Bill W) July 5, 2017 – After racing in the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway with a bent racecar, Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing #2c team built some momentum last weekend at the Fred Brownfield Classic at Grays Harbor Raceway near Elma, Washington. The Oklahoma City driver was caught in a minor accident on Friday, but came back in Saturday’s finale with a runner-up finish. This weekend, the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series heads for the Grizzly Nationals at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Montana.
In last Friday’s prelim at Grays Harbor, the bad luck struck early. “We were plenty fast with the new car, but we got in a wreck in the heat race right off the bat,” says Wayne. “Something happened to the driver in front of us. He stopped in turn four, and I ran him over and knocked the front end out of the car.”
That relegated Wayne to the B main. “We were able to drive up to fifth, which was a couple spots out of a transfer,” he says. “It was twelve laps with no cautions. We missed a transfer by a couple spots and had to take a provisional for the feature. We just made a lap in that and pulled it in.”
Things started much better in Saturday’s finale. “Saturday went a lot better,” says Wayne. “We won the heat from the front row outside. Like usual, we drew the eight to start the feature.”
Wayne would charge forward right away in the feature. “The car was really good,” he says. “We were able to run up to second. The car was really good. I feel like if we started up with (winner Roger) Crockett, we would have beaten him.”
A late restart gave him one last chance. “There were four lapped cars between him and me,” says Wayne. “I just couldn’t get there. We gained on him. When he took the checkers we were coming out of turn four. We would have had a better chance at that one if we had drew a spot up front. Circumstances were, we just couldn’t get there in time.”
Wayne feels comfortable in the new car as the team awaits this weekend’s Grizzly Nationals. “The new car feels really good,” he says. “We’re really excited about this weekend in Montana. It’s time for some ‘Two-C Mojo’!”
