Mark would start seventh in his heat.  “We worked our way up to the win in the heat,” he says.  “The track was a little bit on the faster side.  I’ve been really impressed with the track prep at River Cities this year.  It was heavy on Friday, but it was smooth.  It wasn’t rough.  By feature time, it had a middle, a top and you could ride around the bottom too.”

He would start the main event ninth.  “We worked our way up to the lead about halfway through,” says Mark.  “I had the lead for a couple of laps, and I was coming around four and there was Jackson Moffett.  I don’t know if he broke the hub, but he lost his wheel on his right rear tire.  It went flying up in the air and I had nowhere to go.”

Mark would have to work and do a little early entertaining for the fans to keep his lead.  “I actually clomped him right in the back,” he says.  “I pretty much squared him up and hit him straight on.  I bounced off of him and headed to the infield.  As long as you keep going, you keep your spot, so I did my best.  In the midst of that, I ended up doing about five or six early Victory Lane donuts in the middle of the race.  I kept it running though and I was able to start up front again.”

That wouldn’t be the only contact he would find on his way to the win.  “It was another five laps and a guy spun in front of me,” says Mark.  “I bounced off of him and survived that as well.  By the end, we were able to get the win, but the car looked like it had been through a war zone.”

Unfortunately, the team had to stay home Saturday due to the weather forecast for Knoxville.  “We watched the weather all week long,” says Mark.  “We’re kind of low on crew guys, and that’s why we decided on River Cities instead of I-80 (with the NSL) on Friday.  When I looked at the weather for Knoxville Friday, it looked like 60%, so we decided to stay home.”

Mark received an unexpected call Saturday morning.  “Carrie Underwood was in town,” he says.  “Saturday morning at eight o’clock, my phone was blowing off the hook.  One of the security guards was calling me and telling me one of the buses was leaking antifreeze.  We brought it over (Forx Radiator) and pulled the heater core out so they could go on down the road.  It was entertaining anyway.”
