Short Track Nationals Night #1

98 cars

Passing points were used in the heats. The top forty cars were inverted into four qualifiers. The other 58 were place in Last Chance Races. The top four in each LC race tagged the tail of a qualifier. The top 20 in points in the heats and qualifiers were lined heads-up in the A main, which locked the top three finishers in Saturday's main event.
Heavy rains made for an extremely rough surface and tricky conditions.

A main (started): 1. Kaeding (1) 2. J. Johnson (2) 3. Dale Howard (6) / 4. Jan Howard (14) 5. Standridge (4) 6. Hockett (3) 7. Gray (10) 8. Winters (7) 9. Stenhouse (5) 10. Garner (13) 11. Tankersley (15) 12. Wasmund (16) 13. Whitney (11) 14. Rilat (17) 15. Stewart (9) 16. Stull (8) 17. Crawley (18) 18. Corbin (20) 19. T. Montgomery (12) 20. Wright (19)

J. Johnson shot out to an early lead on the wicked, heavy surface. A number of cars jammed together on the second lap causing the exit of T. Montgomery and Wright. Two laps later, Corbin tipped over in turn two bringing caution. J. Johnson led Kaeding, Standridge, Hockett and Dale Howard back to green flag racing on the restart. As J. Johnson and Kaeding started entering lapped traffic, J. Johnson drifted high in turns one and two on lap 13, and Kaeding shot by on his inside in what would prove to be the winning pass. On lap 17, Tankersley spun, clearing the track ahead of Kaeding, J. Johnson, Dale Howard who had gotten by Standridge, and Stewart. Two laps later, Stewart banged the infield tires bringing the final slowdown. J. Johnson had nothing for Kaeding, who scored his 16th win of the year and first away from the NST. Dale Howard had passed J. Johnson before the last restart, but was passed. Nonetheless, he grabbed third and locked himself into Saturday's main event along with the two leaders. Brother Jan Howard was the hard-charger, cruising from 14th to 4th, but running out of laps to challenge his brother.
