The Marvin Smith Memorial Sprint Car Race Saturday May 28th and Sunday May 29th Cottage Grove Speedway Cottage Grove, Oregon

In what surely will go down as one of the best Marvin Smith Memorial races ever, Jason Solwold did just enough to hold of the hard charging Roger Crockett for the win and $4100. At Cottage Grove Speedway Marvin Smith was one of the most popular drivers ever and to honor him with this race brings out the best drivers the West has to offer. There were drivers from Washington, Oregon, California, and Canada that came to participate in the race and chance for the big payday.

Night #1 saw Roger Crockett holding off Jason Solwold for the win and watching Henry Van Dam come from 17th to 4th. The Main was just great driving with Justyn Cox out of California riding the rim all the way from 15th to 2nd only to hit the wall and blow his tire, but for those 25 laps he put on show. After Crockett and Solwold the rest of the top five was Kyle Hirst followed by Van Dam and Garen Linder. With 37 cars for the first night it brought back memories of the old Northern Sprint Tour days during speedweek. Cottage Grove had not seen a sprint car count like that in a long time. The field was split in half for two qualifying sessions with Solwold setting fast time in session one with an 11.626 and Hirst setting fast time on session number two with an 11.955. The heats were won by Cox, Crockett, Chadd Noland and Bricen James. The dash was won by Kyle Miller driving for Kady Adelman in the 6a. There were two B mains with the top two from each transferring to the A main. In the first B it would be Hirst taking off and leaving the field behind and Jake Helsel getting the second transfer spot. In B number two it would be the 22x of Travis Jacobson taking the lead early and never looking back with Canadian Skylar Gee nabbing the second and final transfer spot.

Night #2 we would be down a couple of cars as we lost both Noland and the 7n of Jared Peterson to blown motors. With the top four from Night #1 already locked into the dash we would qualify 31 and again it would be split into two sessions. In session number one the Rudeen Racing #26 driven by California's Willie Croft would set fast time for the whole weekend with a blistering 11.258. In session two it would be the teenager from California driving the Simpson motorsports #4s Michael Kofoid with an 11.568. There would be four heats with the top four transferring. In Heat #1 JJ Hickle would get around the front row on lap two and lead the rest of the heat followed by Croft, Reece Goetz and Shane Forte. In Heat #2 Cooper Desbien from Roseburg would take the lead from the start and as hard as Kofoid try could not get around him he couldn't, as the track was starting to dry out so down low was were to be and Cooper stayed there for the win, he was followed by Kofoid, Jacobson and the Rob Linsey. Lindsey on a last lap pass got the transfer spot. In Heat #3 Garen Linder won with Evan Margeson out in his nice looking 11m car finishing right behind him, followed by Kyle Miller and Lance Sargent. In the last Heat race of the evening Skylar Gee won with Justyn Cox all over him trying to get the win, but settling for 2nd followed by Bricen James and Robbie Price. The Dash would have the four that were locked in from the A Main from Night #1 and the four fastest that transferred out of their heats. Van Dam took off with Solwold right behind hit but he couldn't catch Van Dam for the pole position. After Van Dam and Solwold the rest of the dash finishing order looked like this with Kofoid, Crockett, Croft, Cox, Hirst and last Miller. There would only be one B main and the top four would be taken and Justin Youngquist would lead all 12 laps followed by Jared Ridge, Jake Helsel and the young lady from California Chelsea Blevins. Cam Smith had the 4th and final spot all but locked up but with two laps to go he went high and off the track only to recover but lost out to Blevins.

The Main was 41 laps of beautiful racing with only two quick cautions the race went green for the bulk of the race and with 24 cars on the track and some of the heaviest hitters the west coast has to offer it was well raced by all. Van Dam jumped to the lead and was gone with Solwold sitting in second and then after a few laps after they got into traffic Solwold was able to wrestle the lead away from Van Dam and coming fast was the master of Cottage Grove Speedway Crockett. He would slowly reel in Van Dam until with about 15 to go he got by him and then for the rest of the race he kept gaining on Solwold when the second yellow flag came out with 6 laps to go to set up a restart. Solwold took off with Crockett in tow and slowly gaining, with the white flag waving Crockett tried one last banzai move and hit Jason coming into turn three but Jason held on for the win and to end one the best Marvin Smith Memorial races ever. It was just classic racing with a stellar field.
