Wednesdays with Wayne - Ditch to Dollywood!

Wednesday, August 23, 2017
Wayne at Sedalia (John Lee – High Fly’N Photos) Wayne at Sedalia (John Lee – High Fly’N Photos) (Bill W) August 23, 2017 – Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team will see much of the state of Tennessee this weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series.  Thursday night, the tour hits Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas before heading to eastern Tennessee and the Smoky Mountain Speedway near Maryville (not quite to Dollywood).  Last Sunday night, the Oklahoma City driver picked up a top ten finish with ASCS at the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia.

Wayne had a tough field in his heat Sunday.  “(Brian) Brown and (Jonathan) Cornell were on the front row and Tony Bruce was beside us (in row two),” he says.  “I just couldn’t get going.  I ran over Cornell on the first start.  Brown beat him on the start and he stood on the brakes.”

The close call had the adrenaline pumping.  “That ended up (ticking) me off,” says Wayne.  “That was the worst thing, because I overdrove the car a little.  I was faster than (Bruce), but I couldn’t get by him.  Every time I chose a way to go by him, he went right with me.”

The fourth-place finish meant starting 13th in the main event.  “The car felt pretty good,” says Wayne.  “At that point, at a track like Sedalia, it’s just circumstances that decide where you finish.  We moved up four spots and finished ninth.  We could have been a little tighter.  We freed up, because I thought it would lock down rubber.  It started to lay rubber, but never lock down.  That partly because no one was really running in the same spot.”

There was some good racing for Wayne back in the pack.  “I cleared some of the guys around me early,” he says.  “We got to ninth and Blake Hahn and I were racing hard.  (Johnny) Herrera got by both of us.  I was searching around looking for somewhere to go.  Then I ended up getting back by Herrera.  We were all running about the same speed out there and we finished ninth.”

Wayne says, “We had some problems with our hauler this week around Fort Worth, and Bill Jewell helped get us back on the road.  He fixed it, and put some “air tabs” on our truck.  It saves us about a mile per gallon with our fuel mileage.”
