Wayne and the team celebrate their win at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial in 2016 (John Lee – High-Fly’N Photos)
(Bill W) September 20, 2017 – The homestretch of the sprint car season is upon us, and Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing #2c team are focused on things one day and one race at a time. This weekend, the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial commences at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. The Oklahoma City native is trying to become the first driver to repeat in the event, having won last year.
Wayne is excited about this weekend. “That win we had last year was one of the biggest in my career,” he says. “Jesse was a good friend and that kid meant the world to me. This is always a good opportunity to visit with his parents, Jack and Connie and celebrate both Jesse and Daniel’s lives.”
Last year, Wayne won on Friday, but fell back in Saturday’s finale, and had to pass Sam Hafertepe Jr., Logan Forler and run down Sammy Swindell to take the win. “It was fun racing with Sammy towards the end,” he says. “I’ll always remember that one, because we really had to work for it. It was a lot of fun.”
Lately, things have been a little “upside down”. This will be the second new car in three races that the team has put together. “Our last time out (September 9 at Flint Creek Speedway in Colcord, Oklahoma) we had the thing won and I flipped it in traffic,” says Wayne. “That’s two cars that we destroyed recently. The good news is, we’ve really got things figured out with the cars, so hopefully, it will be a seamless transition when we get to Wheatland Thursday.”
The remaining Lucas Oil ASCS National Series sees just thirteen shows counting this weekend’s three-day stand. On September 30, the series heads to I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska for the “Fall Brawl”. After that, there will be two-nighters at El Paso County Speedway in Calhan, Colorado, at Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas and Creek County Speedway near Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The series concludes with three night’s at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona. Wayne will also mix in the Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas October 13 and 14.
Everything remaining will be 360 racing for Wayne. “I feel really good about where our 410 program is,” he says. “We were able to finish second at Jackson with a tough field there, and we made the Knoxville Nationals again. We’ve put our 410 stuff up, so by the time the beginning of next year rolls around, we’ll have it ready to go for a few races before we send it back to get freshened.”
