Growing up my first 22 years in Northern California and going to many sprint car races the name Kaeding is synonymous with winning. The Kaeding family is the first family of sprint car racing in these parts and when you go to a track or went to a track that name was probably who you needed to beat. Howard Kaeding the patriarch of the family moved from Nebraska to Campbell, California when he was 15. He and his brother Herb started a wheel widening and repair business for Super Modifieds. In the 1970s, Howard's sons Joel and Brent Kaeding joined the family business, which was renamed Kaeding Performance in 1976, Brent said. The Kaedings began selling sprint car parts and oval track parts in the 1980s. Howard describes himself and his family as raceaholics. He himself started racing in 1954 at the age of 23. Howard won 23 races in a row at the San Jose Speedway in the early 1970s--17 of those wins were accomplished with the No. 3 car--the most of anyone in the history of the racetrack. The car was showcased at the Knoxville Hall of Fame about three years ago.

The Kaedings, Tim, Bud, Brent and HowardThe Kaedings, Tim, Bud, Brent and Howard "The promoter at the race track at the time wrote me a letter that said I was ruining racing," he said with a smile. Howard, 81, raced cars for 45 years and retired at age 65. He still attends races and spends the bulk of his time at Kaeding Performance. The Howard Kaeding Classic is held annually in his honor in Watsonville in July. Then came along his son Brent and all he did was build himself a Hall of Fame career inducted in 2008 that includes over 25 major Series titles. Then Brent has two sons who still today chalk up wins after wins in Tim Kaeding affectionately known as “TK” and Bud Kaeding who made his name in non-wing and USAC racing for years before getting his current ride in the Winged #0 car owned by Morrie Williams. The Howard Kaeding Classic started in 2011 to honor a great man and a great family and is won of the most anticipated races of the year in California. It starts with a big part on Thursday Night and racing both Friday and Saturday nights with a party after the Friday show and BBQ during the day on Saturday. Its a weekend that everyone should do once. This year it was all about Kyke Hirst stepping in the Josh Ford Motorsports #73 for the very first time and winning the Civil War 360 Sprint Series race on Friday night and then coming back in the 21x of Tommy Tarlton Motorsports to win the 410 King of the West Show on Saturday.
