Summer Classic

60 cars

Cars were divided into two groups, Odd and Even. Two complete programs were run. The top 18 in passing points transferred to the A mains, and the top six from the B also transferred.

Odd Group

Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Wayne Johnson 14AJ (1*) 2. Mike Reinke 02 (6*) 3. Sammy Swindell 5 (9*) 4. Calvin Landis 70 (10*) 5. Kevin Swindell 1K (4*) 6. Ty Bartz 75 (3*) 7. Rich Bubak 9x (8) 8. Scott Uttech 7 (7) 9. Matt Moro (5) 10. Chris Walraven 56 (2)

Johnson dominated this one flag to flag. On lap three, Moro was battling Swindell for sixth when the two made contact down the frontstretch. The result was a hard tumble for Moro, he was uninjured but his night was over. Johnson led K. Swindell, Reinke, a charging Landis, Bartz and S. Swindell back to green flag racing. Reinke made quick work of the younger Swindell to nail down second, while S. Swindell moved by both Landis and Kevin for third.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Kevin Huntley 70H (1*) 2. Ryan Anderson 71R (3*) 3. Randy Hannagan 1x (10*) 4. Mike Moore 69 (8*) 5. Justin Henderson D11 (7*) 6. Lynton Jeffrey 7x (2*) 7. Jon Agan 4 (9) 8. Don Droud Jr. 17G (4) 9. Ricky Logan 10 (5) 10. Jesse Giannetto D1 (6)

Contact between Logan and Giannetto at the very beginning resulted in Logan getting over the left front of Giannetto flattening his right rear and sending Giannetto rolling. Both were done for the heat. The restart was no better as Droud took a wicked ride into turn one and on top of the fence, teetering, before he crashed back onto the track. He was done for the night, and walked groggily to the ambulance. Once underway, Huntley led the distance, while Hannagan moved up nicely after a good battle with Moore.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Joe Beaver 53 (4*) 2. Mike Kertscher 80K (3*) 3. Kaley Gharst 44G (8*) 4. Clint Garner 40 (6*) 5. Scott Biertzer 4B (5*) 6. Kim Mock 1mx (10*) 7. Robert Bell 71 (1) 8. Bill Wirth 53w (2) 9. Bill Warren 95 (9) 10. Andy Hunt 9A (7)

Bell led the first lap, before Kertscher took control. He led until a surging Beaver challenged him late. Both were veering towards each other side by side towards the checkered flag, before weaving away. Kertscher weaved far enough to make heavy contact with the wall. He managed to cross the line .1 of a second behind Beaver. The rookie Gharst ran a strong race to finish third.

B main (started): 1. Bubak (1) 2. Logan (7) 3. Agan (8) 4. S. Uttech (3) 5. Warren (4) 6. Bell (2) / 7. Hunt (11) 8. Wirth (5) 9. Giannetto (6) 10. Walraven (9) DNS - Droud, Moro

Bubak led flag to flag, but a surging Logan ran a nice race. Giannetto was solidly in third, when he spun coming to the checkered flags and gently tipped over. The miscue gave the final transfer to Bell.

A main (started): 1. S. Swindell (3) 2. Hannagan (1) 3. Johnson (5) 4. Reinke (6) 5. Beaver (2) 6. Logan (20) 7. Gharst (4) 8. Huntley (7) 9. Ry. Anderson (8) 10. Landis (10) 11. K. Swindell (15) 12. Henderson (13) 13. Jeffrey (18) 14. Moore (11) 15. Biertzer (16) 16. Mock (14) 17. Bartz (17) 18. Warren (23) 19. Agan (21) 20. Bubak (19) 21. S. Uttech (22) 22. Bell (24) 23. Garner (12) 24. Kertscher (9)

Hannagan shot out to an early lead in the 20 lapper with S. Swindell in tow. Johnson quickly moved up, getting around Beaver and settling in third. On lap 11, Hannagan slowed in lapped traffic in turn two and S. Swindell pounced, shooting under him on the back stretch and never looking back. Garner who was running a solid 8th brought out the only caution of the event on lap 17. Logan elected to start on the tail and actually passed more cars than he was credited. Nonetheless, he was the man on the move in this one. S. Swindell earned $3000 for his 40th career Knoxville win.

Even Group

Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Kerry Madsen 55 (1*) 2. Skip Jackson 2 (4*) 3. Tim St. Arnold 7w (2*) 4. Jake Peters 1m (3*) 5. Billy Balog 4c (8*) 6. Ian Madsen F5 (10*) 7. Steve Meyer 85m (7) 8. Dave Uttech 68 (4) 9. Ryan Irwin 49 (9) 10. Billy Alley 22 (6)

Madsen led flag to flag. Peters was in Mark Burch's 1m, the winning car of the first 1200 lb. Nationals. Alley was running strong in fourth when he slowed dramatically and exited on lap four.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Dusty Zomer 1z (3*) 2. Scott Young 3 (2*) 3. Matt Fostad 1H (5*) 4. Travis Whitney 9 (7*) 5. Scott Neitzel 2w (6*) 6. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 40R (9*) 7. KJ Skelton 80 (4) 8. Joe Roe 61 (8) DNS - Fred Ebler 64 (1), Jamie Zaputil 1zz (10)

Zomer inherited the pole position and ran away with this one. His lead was a full straightaway at the checkers. Stenhouse worked his way up nicely in his 2nd trip around Knoxville in a 410.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Brian Brown 21 (5*) 2. Randy Anderson 81 (2*) 3. Colin Northway 60 (6*) 4. Chad Meyer 1w (9*) 5. Jaymie Moyle 5m (8*) 6. Brent Antill 1 (3) 7. Geoff Dodge 44x (10*) 8. Greg Jones 35 (4) 9. Tyler Houseman 50 (7) 10. Wayne Modjeski 77 (1)

Ra. Anderson shot out to the early advantage, but Brown was not to be denied as he went through the field like a shark smelling blood. A Modjeski spin into the wall, set up a restart slidejob for Brown. He made it stick for the win. C. Meyer moved up nicely from his fifth row starting spot.

B main (started): 1. S. Meyer (2) 2. Alley (9) 3. Antill (1) 4. Skelton (3) 5. Roe (5) 6. D. Uttech (4) / 7. Irwin (7) 8. Jones (6) 9. Houseman (8) DNS - Modjeski, Ebler, Zaputil

Meyer led the distance, but Alley was clearly the fastest car on the track in the 10 lapper.

A main (started): 1. K. Madsen (2) 2. Brown (1) 3. C. Meyer (6) 4. Zomer (4) 5. Alley (20) 6. Northway (5) 7. Peters (14) 8. St. Arnold (9) 9. I. Madsen (15) 10. Moyle (13) 11. Young (7) 12. Stenhouse (17) 13. Neitzel (16) 14. Ra. Anderson (8) 15. S. Meyer (19) 16. Balog (11) 17. Antill (21) 18. Whitney (12) 19. Dodge (18) 20. Jackson (3) 21. Roe (23) 22. Skelton (22) 23. D. Uttech (24) 24. Folstad (10)

Alley needed a second push to get started, and posted the event at the rear. Brown shot out to a nice advantage and started using the cushion to pass lapped traffic. Madsen tracked him down and made his winning pass on lap seven. The race appeared as if it would go green to checker, before Folstad stopped on the frontstretch on the white flag lap. At the time, Madsen led Brown, C. Meyer, Jackson, Zomer, Northway and Alley back to a green, white checker finish. There was no catching Madsen who won his 11th at Knoxville, but Alley proved to be the hard-charger, moving up 19 spots after restarting at the tail.

The top 16 in points for the night will redraw for their starting spots in the $10,000 finale in front of the grandstand on Saturday night. They are: Brown, S. Swindell, Hannagan, Madsen, Beaver, Johnson, C. Meyer, Reinke, Zomer, Gharst, Northway, Huntley, Ry. Anderson, St. Arnold, Peters and Landis.
