(Bill W) September 28, 2016 – Brady Bacon arrived at the Four Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio around noon on Saturday. By the time the festivities were over around 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning, he had racked up a pair of podium finishes, a fourth and a fifth place finish. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver competed in all four divisions, USAC National Midgets, USAC National Sprint Cars, the All Stars and USAC Silver Crown. He was one of only two drivers (the other being Tyler Courtney) who performed quadruple duty Saturday.
Hot laps started around 4:30 p.m., followed by heat races. “Qualifying went well, we timed in seventh quick with the All Stars, fifth with the Silver Crown, second with the USAC sprints and third with the midgets,” says Brady. “We went on to finish second in the heats with the All Stars, which got us in the Dash, second with the USAC sprints and second with the midget.”
Brady was driving the Frank Manafort Racing #76M with the USAC midgets and started fourth in the feature. “We were going pretty well,” he says. “We developed a vibration. I’m not sure what the problem was. I didn’t want to get a DNF, so I backed it off a little bit. We had a shot at second there, but Rico (Abreu) was kind of in a class by himself out there. We finished third and we were right there with (second place) Tanner Thorson. We’ve made some changes on the engine, and we’re definitely making up a lot of ground on these other guys. We’re a lot more competitive than we were early in the year.”
After going from sixth to second in his heat, he would start the Hoffman Racing/Dynamics, Inc. #69 outside row three in the USAC National Sprint Car feature. “I didn’t get the start I wanted, and Chris Windom got in front of me,” says Brady. “We had some small motor issues, and we didn’t take off on the restarts as well as we wanted. (Dave) Darland got by me, and I had to get back by him. That may have cost us a spot. I felt we were better than (Justin) Grant and (Chris) Windom at some points of the race, but they kind of got out in front. It was hard to catch them at that point and we ended up third.”
With the All Stars, Brady finished fifth in the Dash, and that’s where he would start the main event aboard his #99. “I don’t have a whole lot of laps with a wing on a track like Eldora,” he says. “I was moving around a little bit trying to find a balance, and how far to move the wing back. I feel like we were pretty good. We were able to get by a couple of guys late, including (Jac) Haud(enschild). We were able to get a top five with the All Stars, and we were definitely happy with that.”
The final event of the night was the 50-lap USAC Silver Crown feature. He would start fifth. “We kind of hovered around that fifth spot the whole race,” says Brady. “We kind of got where we could pass a bit in the middle of the track. We swapped spots with (Jeff) Swindell a few times back and forth. We had the car a little tight and the cushion was rough. We couldn’t run as hard as (winner) Windom. He had his car freer than everyone and he was running way harder. We did have a fast car there and finished fourth.”
Brady had a great night overall. “We were pleased with everything,” he says. “We had a nice run in the sprint car and gained a lot of points in the midget. Now we have a legitimate shot at a championship in that. It was definitely a good weekend. I would have liked to win one, but it was great to get a top five in four different racecars.
Was he tired after so many laps? “It wasn’t the laps as much as the time,” says Brady. “We were always doing stuff. It was exhausting, but we did what we went there to do.”
