Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic Night #1

43 cars

The three-night Australian classic has two qualifying nights. The cars are split in two groups. Tonight’s group was seeded into two qualifying groups. The first group made up heats one two, five and six and the second group comprised heats three, four, seven and eight. Drivers earned points to add to passing points in two sets of heats. Justin Whittall (1st car out to time) set quick time in Group 1 and overall at 11.227 seconds. Jock Goodyer (3rd car out) was second quick, followed by Kaeden Manders (18th), Will Carroll (5th) and Glen Sutherland (6th). Carson Macedo broke a U-joint and didn’t get a time in sending the team scrambling. Kerry Madsen (4th car out) was quickest in the second group at 11.734 seconds. Matt Egel (21st) was second quick, followed by Max Guilford (17th), Tate Frost (16th) and Ben Morris (6th). Ryan Potts destroyed his car in hot laps and would not race the rest of the night in group two.

Heat one (started): 1. Manders W71 (2) 2. Whittall USA21 (1) 3. Parker Scott SA55 (4) 4. Sutherland S20 (3) 5. Grant Stansfield VA88 (6) 6. TJ Stutts N55 (5) 7. Tim Hutchins T7 (7) 8. Kyle Jensen Q12 (8) 9. Dennis Jones V17 (10) 10. Steven Loader V10 (9) 11. David Dennison V15 (11)

The first set of 10-lap heats were lined straight up by time, and the second set of heats had an invert of eight. Passing points were added together. Manders led the distance in a mostly single-file affair. Whittall made a late run to challenge, but fell short.

Heat two (started): 1. Goodyer T22 (1) 2. Marcus Dumesny N47 (4) 3. Peter Doukas V98 (3) 4. Will Carroll NT25 (2) 5. Ryan Newton Q66 (6) 6. Carson Macedo W60 (11) 7. Daniel Pestka S27 (5) 8. Brendan Guerin S96 (7) 9. Andrew Hughes V28 (8) 10. David Aldersley V64 (10) 11. Leigh Mugavin V22 (9)

Carroll led early over Goodyer, Dumesny and Doukas. Newton took over fourth on lap two. Goodyer dogged Carroll before taking the lead in lapped traffic with two to go. On lap nine, Dumesny and Doukas passed Carroll for second and third. Macedo charged from 11th to sixth.

Heat three (started): 1. Morris S3 (3) 2. Rusty Hickman V45 (4) 3. Madsen W95 (1) 4. Guilford NZ1 (2) 5. Daniel Sayre N16 (6) 6. Tim Kaeding N88 (5) 7. Scott Enderl S11 (9) 8. Matthew Symons V70 (7) 9. Brett Hobson NS96 (8) 10. Troy Hose V57 (10) DNS – Ryan Potts NQ24

Madsen was penalized a row for jumping the initial start. Morris inherited a front row starting spot and led wire to wire. Guilford rode second until Hickman put a slider on him in turn two with two to go. Madsen gained third from Guilford on the white flag lap.

Heat four (started): 1. Egel S52 (1) 2. Frost T62 (2) 3. Brock Hallett Q5 (3) 4. Callum Williamson W3 (6) 5. Alex Attard N53 (7) 6. Bobby Daly V8 (8) 7. Kobi Wright N78 (5) 8. Adam Alexander T16 (9) 9. Eddie Lumbar N36 (10) 10. Daniel Storer VA43 (4)

Egel led the distance over Frost. On lap two, both Hallett and Williamson got by Storer, who would eventually retire for the night. That was for third and fourth.

Heat five (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Hutchins (2*) 2. Stutts (4*) 3. Sutherland (6*) 4. Newton (3*) 5. Carroll (7*) 6. Dumesny (5*) 7. Aldersley (9) 8. Hughes (1) 9. Dennison (11) 10. Whittall (8) 11. Loader (10)

The top twenty in combined points made the feature. Carroll got up the track and tagged Whittall. Loader was caught up in it and flipped. He was unhurt. Whittall was also done when he suffered a flat right front. Hutchins led wire to wire over Stutts. Sutherland shot from fifth to third two laps in and Newton followed in fourth. Hughes was running third early, but did a 360 spin on lap three.

Heat six (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Guerin (2) 2. Doukas (6*) 3. Pestka (4) 4. Macedo (11) 5. Goodyer (8*) 6. Manders (7*) 7. Scott (5*) 8. D. Jones (9) 9. Mugavin (10) 10. Jensen (1) 11. Stansfield (3)

Guerin led the distance. Doukas passed Stansfield for third on lap two. Goodyer shot from sixth to fourth on lap three. Macedo was coming from the rear however, and split two cars in three-wide action to claim fourth before Stansfield stopped on lap four to bring a caution. Doukas snagged second from Pestka on lap seven. Macedo tried a slide for life, but contacted the wall. He would finish fourth. His passing performance was not rewarded as his absence of qualifying points put him at the rear of the B anyway. Time for a charge later.

Heat seven (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Frost (6*) 2. Madsen (7*) 3. Kaeding (4*) 4. Williamson (3*) 5. Enderl (9) 6. Lumbar (8) 7. Morris (5*) 8. Symons (2) 9. Daly (1) DNS – Storer, Pottts

Daly got into the turn two wall and exited before a lap could be completed. Symons just blasted into Williamson, crushing him into the wall at the second try at green. The tangle took officials so long to clear, a fuel stop was needed. Williamson would continue with wing damage. Frost led Madsen the whole way as both improved their starting position with the crash. Morris exited on lap two. Williamson survived for fourth.

Heat eight (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Sayre (3*) 2. Egel (8*) 3. Hickman (5*) 4. Guilford (7*) 5. Hallett (6*) 6. Wright (4) 7. Hobson (1) 8. Alexander (10) 9. Hose (9) 10. Attard (2)
