The quest to sport the #1 as an Australian titlist begins. It’s all about points as tonight’s results dictates starting positions for Saturday’s finale.

Drivers were seeded into five groups. They qualified with their groups in random draw order. Brock Hallett led group one with a time of 11.506, followed by Brad Vaughan at 11.621. The second group was led by Lachlan McHugh at 11.528 followed by Parker Scott at 11.569. McHugh got only his first lap in, and needed an engine change before the heats. The third group saw five drivers faster than any in the first two groups. Ryan Newton was quickest at 11.415 followed by Brendan Guerin at 11.449. Seven more drivers in group three were quicker yet, led by Dane Court at 11.033 and Lyke Storer at 11.234. Jordyn Charge (11.192) led the fifth group in qualifying, followed by defending titlist James McFadden at 11.253.

The heats were 12 laps and points are the name of the game. The first round of five had a qualifying invert of eight. Williamson was penalized a row for jumping the initial start. Keen led Moule, Williamson, Sayre and Menz early. Menz took over fourth from Sayre on lap two. Vaughan passed Sayre for fifth on lap three. Heinrich challenged Vaugh for fifth and took the spot on lap six. Moule made his winning pass high in turn four with two to go.

D. Storer led the distance. Enderl was second early over Frost and J. Attard. McHugh was up to fourth by lap two. Ma. Dumesny entered the top five on lap three. Frost slipped by Enderl for second on lap seven, and McHugh put a slider on Enderl in turn two with one lap to go.

The heat started with a tremendous crash into turn one. Guilford moved up and made contact with Doukas sending both cars into a series of flips. Both drivers walked away. Kingshot led wire to wire ahead of Manders. Pestka moved by Walker for third on lap two. Newton was to fifth by lap three. Newton pout a slider on Walker in turn four to take fourth on lap five. Titman ended in the top five, but was penalized two spots for an infield pass.

Heat four (started): 1. Ian Madsen S97 (2) 2. Timothy Hutchins T7 (3) 3. Jock Goodyer T22 (6) 4. Luke Storer S98 (7) 5. Matt Egel S52 (4) 6. Ryan Jones S63 (1) 7. Kinser Claridge Q47 (10) 8. Ben Morris S3 (5) 9. Dane Court V96 (8) 10. Chad Gardner T45 (11) 11. Adam Alexander T16 (9)

Hutchins got a good start, maybe too good, and led the distance over Madsen. In the end, Hutchins would be penalized a spot for a bit of a jump on the start. Goodyer and L. Storer worked by Jones for third and fourth with two to go. Egel grabbed fifth late.

Heat five (started): 1. Randy Morgan Q54 (2) 2. Glen Sutherland S20 (4) 3. Michael Saller N56 (1) 4. James McFadden A1 (7) 5. Brodie Davis (9) 6. Dennis Jones V17 (4) 7. Ryan Potts NQ24 (11) 8. Kodi Clayden WX40 (10) 9. Jordyn Charge NT11 (8) 10. Jy Corbet NQ10 (5) 11. Marcus Dumesny N47 (6)

Morgan led Saller, Sutherlan, D. Jones and McFadden early. McFadden passed D. Jones for fourth on lap three. Officials deemed it was in the infield so he was penalized two spots during a lap five caution for Mar. Dumesny, who broke his front end while trying to get by D. Jones. The restart saw Morgan leading Saller, Sutherland, D. Jones, Davis and McFadden. McFadden moved from sixth to fourth immediately on the restart. Charge moved up to fifth with two to go, but spun a lap later, collecting Corbet, who flipped. He was o.k. Morgan led Saller, Sutherland, McFadden and D. Jones back to green. Sutherland moved up a spot to second on the restart.

The second round of heats lined straight up by qualifying time. The top 14 in total points qualified for the feature, and the next 16 to the B. Hallett led the distance. Heinrich was second early, ahead of Sayre and Vaughan. Keen got into the wall on lap three, bringing caution. Moule entered the top five at that point and traded fourth with Vaughan twice. Sayre found his way by Heinrich for second at the halfway point.

Scott was determined and charged by McHugh to lead the distance in a mostly single-file affair after contact before a lap could be completed between Wyllie, who restarted at the rear, and McHugh.

Newton led the distance in a mostly single-file affair.

L. Storer led Court, Morris and Goodyer early. Goodyer hit the cushion hard to gain third in turn four from Morris on lap four. Morris almost lost it in three and four on lap five, but kept it going. Alexander did a 360 spin with five to go bringing caution. Hutchins pulled to the infield. Goodyer hit the high side again to squeak by Court for second, and then set his sights on the leader. He ripped around L. Storer high in turn two on lap eleven to take an exciting win.

McFadden led a single-file affair.

The 15-lapper took the top four to the feature. Vaughan led lap one before Mat. Dumesny shot around him on lap two. Court was running fourth on lap four when he tagged the wall. Mat. Dumesny led Vaughan, Madsen, Sutherland and Kingshott back to green. Kingshott hit the cushion for fourth on the restart. In a good battle for second, Madsen shot by Vaughan for a lap, but Vaughan returned the favor. With eight to go, Morris tipped over. He was ok. The leader narrowly avoided the incident. Kingshott got around Madsen for third on the restart. With three to go, Egel got upside down trying to move up from seventh. Mat. Dumesny led them back to green, ahead of Vaughan, Kingshott, Madsen and Sayre. Sutherland got into the wall hard with six to go. He was o.k. Vaughan exited during the yellow, surrendering second and giving Sayre the fourth transfer spot.

The 25-lapper paid $3,000 and all important points for Saturday’s finale. Newton led early over Goodyer, McHugh, L. Storer and McFadden. Pestka shot by McFadden for fifth on lap two. On lap ten, Newton bobbled sideways a bit, and Goodyer got by him for the lead. Newton recovered to get back by to lead lap 11. L. Storer passed McHugh for third. He would be penalized two spots on a caution for a spun Frost with 12 to go. Newton led Goodyer, McHugh, Pestka and L. Storer back to green. A great race ensued with Newton high and Goodyer low. Goodyer took the lap with ten to go, and Newton recaptured the lead on lap 17. L. Storer got by Petka for fourth. Goodyer got back by ewton for the lead with six to go, and McFadden entered the top five with five to go. Madsen flipped hard in turn three with five to go. He walked away, but was taken in for observation. The restart saw Goodyer leading Newton, McHugh, Pestka, who recaptured fourth and McFadden with five to go. McFadden moved into fourth on the restart, while Goodyer checked out for the win. Newton and Goodyer were the two top point getters for the night.

The heats were eight laps in distance. Broome led lap one over Fallon and Mason. Heard moved up from eighth to third by lap two. Heard moved into second on lap three before Clifford stopped to bring out a caution. Mason led Heard, Miller, Broome and Fallon back to green. Clifford recovered from his tail restart to move up to fifth, and then take fourth on lap six.

Heat two (started): 1. Mitchell Broome S35 (1) 2. Matthew Michelson S42 (2) 3. Hayden Jericho S25 (3) 4. Kaitlin Vickers S98 (9) 5. Melissa Crouch S7 (6) 6. Bard Kirtland S17 (4) 7. Scott Vivian S85 (5) 8. Blake Walsh NT1 (7) 9. Kirby Hillyer S86 (8) DNS – Dillon Siely V87

Hillyer flipped down the frontstretch to start things, getting over the wheel of Crouch. Michelson led M. Broome and Jericho early. M. Broome put a slider on Michelson to take the lead on lap three. Walsh exited on lap five.

Heat three (started): 1. Clifford (1) 2. Millar (2) 3. Mason (4) 4. Crouch (3) 5. R. Broome (5) 6. Crafter (7) 7. Michelson (6) DNS – Siely, Hillyer, Kirtland

Clifford led the distance. Millar grabbed second from Crouch on lap two. Michelson came to a stop and exited on the same lap. Mason passed Crouch for third on that restart.

Heat four (started): 1. Vickers (2) 2. Heard (1) 3. Jericho (6) 4. M. Broome (8) 5. Aston (3) 6. Vivian (4) 7. Mason (9) 8. Fallon (7) 9. Pitcher (5) DNS – Walsh

Vickers led the distance over Heard. Mason took third from R. Broome on lap two. Pitcher exited on lap four.

Michelson stopped before a lap could be completed in the 15-lapper and exited. On the next try, Jericho got sideways and tipped over. H. Mason took the lead ahead of Clifford and Heard. One lap in, Crouch spun, bringing another caution. The lead five remained the same up to a three-car incident involving J. Mason, Crafter and Vivian on lap four. When the green flew, Millar went from fifth to third. On lap eight, both Clifford and Millar cruised by H. Mason to the front. With four laps to go, Vickers claimed the podium spot.
