After a weather cancellation last Saturday and rain pretty much all week this week Mother Nature gave us a break. After furious work, the crack track prep team at Eagle Raceway readied the racing surface for Battle at the High Banks, presented by Pepsi of Lincoln, Avid Realty and Meininger Fire Protection. With so many other tracks in the area calling off their events it was obvious that people were more than ready for the sights and smells of competition, shown by the very large crowd in the grandstands and 143 teams filling the pits.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing action.
The first A Main of the night was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Cameron Thompson’s 2T was first back to the flag stand, followed by the 10 of Brad Schreiner, Nate Weiler’s 4W and Josh Riggins in the 14J. Lap 2 saw Schreiner get over the cushion in turn 1, bicycled and ended up going over in turn 2. He was not seriously injured but his night was done. That brought out the Eastep Wheels Choose Cone. Thompson, Riggins, Weiler and the 14T of Tyler Hendrickson were your top 4 for the restart. Billy Alley got past Hendrickson to put the 11 into fourth place on the restart. Alley moved up to third the next time around. Hendrickson regained the fourth spot on lap 5, passing Weiler for the position. The red flag was displayed again on lap 9 when the 03 of -Shayle Bade caught the wall before the pit entrance, flipping and ending up on the grass above the turn 1 wall. She was not hurt but headed to her pit while the Bag and Tag Tow Crew extricated her race car and followed her back to her pit. Your Choose Cone Restart top 4 was Thompson, Riggins, Alley and Hendrickson. Alley got past Riggins for second on the restart. Cole Wayman jumped up to third the following circuit in the 18W with Hendrickson also passing Riggins for fourth the next lap. Alley snagged the top spot from Thompson on lap 12. 2 laps later Wayman also passed Thompson to move into second with Hendrickson advancing to third on lap 15. The 35L of Gaige Weldon slowed to a stop on the front stretch with 9 to go to bunch up the field. Trevor Grossenbacher moved his #35 into fourth place on the restart. Joey Danley got past Grossenbacher with 6 to go, putting the 14 into fourth position. The yellow lights were lit again with just 3 laps remaining when the 2A of Alex Salzman slowed going into turn 4 as Alley barely missed him. The final change in the top 4 came on the final circuit when Danley passed Hendrickson, making your top 4 Alley, Wayman, Danley and Hendrickson.
Alley was a fierce long time competitor in the 360 sprints in the early 2000’s and showed that he still knew his way around Eagle Raceway. He said “Jeff Stefonik gives me a great race car every week with Toby Chapman and Bill and Rich work their butts off. I’m just grateful to be able to drive a sprint car again. Even this Racesaver sprint that we race around the Midwest takes a lot of work and these guys put in that work so I’m happy that I could win for them tonight. With all of the rain we’ve had it was kind of to be expected to have a bumpy track tonight. I’s sure it was a very hard time for Roger just to get the race in. He had to work his tail off to even give us a racetrack! You have to hit the holes square on and my car was great, allowing me to get through them. We started eighth but were running fifth pretty quickly. With clean air and a clean track in front of me that gave me a big advantage.” Alley’s sponsors include Stefonik Motorsports and Benchmark Excavating.
