Huset’s Hustle Night #1

WoO

50 cars

The 50 cars were split into two groups for qualifying, with the first group making up heats one through three, and group two comprising heats four through six. Justin Henderson (6th car out to time) set the standard on the quarter, mile and overall in the first group at 10.698 seconds. He was followed by Austin McCarl (17th car out), Garet Williamson (16th), Emerson Axsom (13th) and Sheldon Haudenschild (20th). Daison Pursley (1st car out) was quickest in the second group at 10.942 seconds, ahead of Christopher Thram (5th), Skylar Gee (16th), Buddy Kofoid (8th) and Cole Macedo (10th). Kasey Jedrzejek had trouble in hot laps and failed to get a time in.

Opening ceremonies included a four F-16 fighter jet flyover, which was really cool.

Tonight was all about points setting up for the night, and into Thursday’s $150,000 to win Huset’s Hustle feature. The Chuck Zitterich format was used adding qualifying points with heat finish points.

Heat one (started, *transferred to feature): 1. 8, Jacob Hughes (1); 2. 45X, Rees Moran (2*); 3. 41, Carson Macedo (3*); 4. 27, Emerson Axsom (5*); 5. 64, Andy Pake (7); 6. 17B, Bill Balog (4*); 7. 27W, Weston Olson (8); 8. 11, Justin Henderson (6*); 9. 33, Scotty Broty (9)

10-lap heats had an invert of six, with heat finishing points added to qualifying points, taking the top ten in each group to the A, and the top four in each group to the redraw. This heat saw little happening and the cars rolling the bottom. Pake’s pass of Balog for fifth on lap two was the only action in the top five.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. 55, Kerry Madsen (1); 2. 7BC, Tyler Courtney (2); 3. 18, Sheldon Haudenschild (5*); 4. 17, Spencer Bayston (3); 5. 88, Austin McCarl (6*); 6. 1S, Logan Schuchart (7); 7. 31, Koby Werkmeister (8); 8. 13, Mark Dobmeier (4)

Action is starting to pick up now. Dobmeier and Haudenschild tried for the same real estate heading into turn one. Dobmeier got the worse end of the deal and flipped hard into turn one. He walked away. Werkmeister also caught a piece of the action, but made repairs in the work area and returned. Madsen led the distance in this one, and held off Courtney in a good race. The other battle saw Bayston and Haud battling back and forth for third. Haud won the fun duel on the last lap.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. 77, Giovanni Scelzi (2); 2. 16, Riley Goodno (1); 3. 80P, Jacob Peterson (4*); 4. 15, Donny Schatz (5*); 5. 23, Garet Williamson (6*); 6. 21, Brian Brown (3); 7. 11M, Terry McCarl (7); 8. 14H, Matt Juhl (8)

Scelzi paced this one wire to wire ahead of Goodno and Peterson. Schatz passed Brown for fourth on lap two, and Williamson followed him by on the low side a lap later to capture fifth.

Heat four (started, *qualified for feature): 1. 83, Michael Kofoid (5*); 2. 10, Ryan Timms (2*); 3. 9R, Chase Randall (4*); 4. 9, Daison Pursley (6*); 5. 7S, Chris Windom (3); 6. 28M, Conner Morrell (1); 7. 44, Chris Martin (7); 8. 6, Kasey Jedrzejek (9); 9. 27C, Carson McCarl (8)

Morrell led Tims and Kofoid early. Timms took the lead on lap two, and Kofoid followed him into second. On lap three, Randall passed Morrelll for third. Pursley got by Windom for fifth on lap four, then both of them moved by Morrell into fourth and fifth on lap five. Kofoid and Timms battled high and low before Kofoid, made the winning pass with three to go, to earn high point earner.

Heat five (started, *qualified for feature): 1. 83JR, Sam Henderson (1); 2. 2, David Gravel (4*); 3. 17A, Jack Anderson (2); 4. 2C, Cole Macedo (5*); 5. 51, Ashton Torgerson (7); 6. 24T, Christopher Thram (6*); 7. 14T, Tim Estenson (3); 8. 92, Zach Daum (8)

S Henderson led the distance. Gravel used the high side to drive around Anderson for second on lap three. Torgerson took fifth from Estenson at the halfway point.

Heat six (started, *qualified for feature): 1. 3, Dayne Kingshott (2); 2. 15H, Sam Hafertepe Jr (3*); 3. 22K, Kaleb Johnson (5*); 4. 9D, Dominic Dobesh (1); 5. 25, Jy Corbet (4); 6. 16C, Skylar Gee (6*); 7. 96, Blaine Stegenga (8); 8. G5, Gage Pulkrabek (7)

Kingshott and Dobesh traded the lead the first three laps before Kingshott took control. K Johnson passed Corbet for fourth on lap four. Hafertepe moved under Dobesh for second at the halfway point and K Johnson followed him into third a lap later.

C main (started): 1. G5, Gage Pulkrabek (2); 2. 31, Koby Werkmeister (5) / 3. 6, Kasey Jedrzejek (9); 4. 92, Zach Daum (6); 5. 96, Blaine Stegenga (4); 6. 14H, Matt Juhl (7); 7. 11M, Terry McCarl (1); 8. 27W, Weston Olson (3); 9. 33, Scotty Broty (8); DNS - 27C, Carson McCarl

The 10-lapper took the top two to the back of the B. Broty flipped in turn two when the green fell. He walked away. Olson also exited after dropping oil in the work area. T McCarl led early over Pulkrabek and Werkmeister. Jedrzejek went from the tail to fourth by the second lap. On lap five, T McCarl blew a right rear tire ending his run up front. Pulkrabek and Werkmeister maintained for the transfer spots.

G5, Gage Pulkrabek (20); DNS - 13, Mark Dobmeier

The 12-lapper took the top four to the back of the A. Dobesh got into the back of another car when the green fell and limped up the track, collecting Schuchart, who took a hard ride into the turn one wall. He walked away. The restart went green to checker. Scelzi led the distance over Bayston. On lap two, Windom drove by Courtney for the fourth and final transfer spot. He reeled in Corbet and passed him in the last corner for third.

A main (started): 1. 83, Michael Kofoid (4); 2. 18, Sheldon Haudenschild (6); 3. 23, Garet Williamson (7); 4. 88, Austin McCarl (5); 5. 2C, Cole Macedo (10); 6. 22K, Kaleb Johnson (1); 7. 9R, Chase Randall (14); 8. 27, Emerson Axsom (3); 9. 15, Donny Schatz (9); 10. 24T, Christopher Thram (2); 11. 9, Daison Pursley (8); 12. 11, Justin Henderson (11); 13. 2, David Gravel (12); 14. 17, Spencer Bayston (22); 15. 16C, Skylar Gee (16); 16. 77, Giovanni Scelzi (21); 17. 45X, Rees Moran (19); 18. 10, Ryan Timms (20); 19. 7S, Chris Windom (23); 20. 15H, Sam Hafertepe Jr (18); 21. 25, Jy Corbet (24); 22. 80P, Jacob Peterson (13); 23. 17B, Bill Balog (17); 24. 41, Carson Macedo (15)

A lengthy track prep turned out to be what the Doctor ordered on the new surface, as the racing was exceptional…once the 35-lapper got going that is. Kofoid has been on another world as far as Huset’s goes, but he had to work for this one. Thram led early over K Johnson, Kofoid, A McCarl and Axsom. A spin by Ca Macedo a lap in slowed things. Thram chose the inside line on the double-file restart. Haudenschild took fifth when the green fell, but a chain reaction of colliding cars saw Gravel spin as a result just a lap later. That negated a Kofoid pass for second. Williamson shot into the top five on the restart, but that too was negated when contact sent Ca Macedo flipping into the turn three fence. He was unhurt. The last 33 laps would go green. Thram led K Johnson, Kofoid, A McCarl and Haudenschild back to green. Haud passed McCarl for fourth on the low side on lap seven, but Austin steamed back by on lap eight. Thram hesitated a couple laps behind traffic, bunching the top five. In traffic, Kofoid passed K Johnso for second on lap 14, and then ripped around Thram to take the point on lap 15. A McCarl was by K Johnson for third, and Haud moved into fourth on lap 16. A McCarl and Thram traded second, with Thram keeping the spot on lap 18. On Lap 19, Haud passed them both to move into second. A McCarl then followed Haud into third on lap 20. Shortly after, Williamson and Co Macedo moved into fourth and fifth. Williamson would keep his momentum and get by A McCarl for the third spot with six to go. Haudenschild briefly pulled within range of Kofoid, but Buddy pulled away in the late stages to take home the $20,000. Buddy matched Mark Kinser’s record of four straight WoO wins at Huset’s, and his seventh career win there tied him with Steve Kinser with three more races to go this week.
