Drivers were split into two groups, and five of them got under Tim Kaeding’s 25, year old record in time trials. Four of those drivers were in the first group, led by new track record holder, Aaron Reutzel (5th car out to time), who clocked a lap of 9.772 seconds. He was followed by Tanner Thorson (15th car out), Justin Peck (10th), Rico Abreu (3rd) and Justin Sanders (16th). Giovanni Scelzi (10th car out) was also under the old record at 9.889 seconds and led the second group. Tanner Holmes (1st) was second quick, followed by Corey Day (3rd), Shane Golobic (2nd) and Kerry Madsen (4th).
Two drivers got upside down in qualifying, one in each group. John Clark tipped over in turn three in the first group, and Chase Randall, who had been quickest in hot laps, dumped in turn two. Neither got a time in. Koa Crane battled mechanical issues all night and didn’t get a time in either.
Heat one (started): 1. 26, Justin Peck (1); 2. 2X, Justin Sanders (2); 3. 46JR, Joel Myers Jr (3); 4. 33, Dylan Bloomfield (8); 5. 42, Sye Lynch (5) / 6. 4, Kasey Kahne (9); 7. 2A, Austin Wood (7); 8. 87, Aaron Reutzel (4); 9. 17GP, Brock Zearfoss (10); 10. 10, Dominic Gorden (6); DNS - 24K, Koa Crane
8-lap heats took the top five to the feature, and the heat winner, and fastest qualifier (starting fourth) to the Dash. If the fastest qualifier didn’t make the top five, the top two finisher went to the Dash, which was the case in the first two heats. Wood spun before a lap could be completed. On the next attempt at a start, Lynch got into Reutzel, who got sideways and collected Gorden. Peck led from there, ahead of Sanders, Myers, Bloomfield and Lynch.
Heat two (started): 1. 24, Rico Abreu (1); 2. 21L, Landon Brooks (2); 3. W, Kaleb Montgomery (3); 4. 7, Seth Standley (7); 5. 45, Jake Morgan (5) / 6. 0, Tim Kaeding (9); 7. 88, Tanner Thorson (4); 8. 2K, Jake Andreotti (6); 9. 12J, John Clark (10); 10. 5, Dominic Scelzi (8)
The first try at green saw D. Scelzi launch over turn two and do two somersaults into the outside fence. He was ok. Second quick timer Thorson went to the work area and restarted at the tail. Abreu led Brooks, Montgomery, Morgan and Andreotti early before Standley and Andreotti got together in a battle for the final transfer spot. Standley restarted at the tail, and proved that those brave enough to pound the cushion would find risk but also reward. On lap six, Kaeding took the final transfer from Andreotti, but Standley was pounding the cushion and roared around Kaeding into the final transfer on lap seven. He would add insurance in the last corner and get by Morgan for fourth, in the run of the heats.
Heat three (started): 1. 14, Corey Day (1); 2. 55, Kerry Madsen (2); 3. 77, Giovanni Scelzi (4); 4. X1, Chance Grasty (6); 5. 21, James McFadden (7) / 6. 9, Daison Pursley (3); 7. 83T, Tanner Carrick (9); 8. 31, Jett Yantis (8); 9. 61, Travis Labat (10); 10. 7C, Colby Copeland (5)
Day led Madsen, G. Scelzi, Grasty and Pursley early. A lap in, Copeland stopped after contact with McFadden, who gained the fifth and final transfer from Pursley on the restart.
Heat four (started): 1. 17W, Shane Golobic (1); 2. 2XM, Max Mittry (2); 3. 7BC, Tyler Courtney (3); 4. 13, Tanner Holmes (4); 5. 15, Nick Parker (9) / 6. 24D, Danny Sams III (6); 7. 19, Brent Marks (5); 8. 26R, Levi Hillier (7); 9. 7W, Dennis Scherer (8); DNS - 9R, Chase Randall
Scherer spun before a lap was completed. Golobic led the distance over Mittry, Courtney and Holmes. Marsk did not take to the bullring and backed up immediately, while Parker moved into the final transfer on lap three. A second spin by Scherer slowed things at the halfway point, but the transfers were decided.
C main (started): 1. 17GP, Brock Zearfoss (1); 2. 10, Dominic Gorden (5) / 3. 12J, John Clark (3); 4. 7C, Colby Copeland (6); 5. 9R, Chase Randall (7); 6. 61, Travis Labat (2); 7. 7W, Dennis Scherer (4); DNS - 5, Dominic Scelzi; 24K, Koa Crane
The 8-lapper took the top two to the B. The insane weekend continued for D. Scelzi, as he could not start the car. Zearfoss went wire to wire. Clark held the second transfer until Gorden pounded the cushion in three and four and took it with two to go.
Dash (started): 1. 14, Corey Day (1); 2. 13, Tanner Holmes (2); 3. 77, Giovanni Scelzi (3); 4. 17W, Shane Golobic (4); 5. 2X, Justin Sanders (5); 6. 26, Justin Peck (6); 7. 24, Rico Abreu (7); 8. 21L, Landon Brooks (8)
The 7-lapper determined the top four rows of starting spots for the A. They finished the way they started.
B main (started): 1. 87, Aaron Reutzel (1); 2. 9, Daison Pursley (2); 3. 88, Tanner Thorson (9); 4. 4, Kasey Kahne (3) / 5. 10, Dominic Gorden (14); 6. 83T, Tanner Carrick (6); 7. 17GP, Brock Zearfoss (13); 8. 2K, Jake Andreotti (11); 9. 26R, Levi Hillier (12); 10. 19, Brent Marks (8); 11. 24D, Danny Sams III (4); 12. 31, Jett Yantis (10); 13. 2A, Austin Wood (7); 14. 0, Tim Kaeding (5)
The marathon 12-lapper took the top four to the A. Reutzel led Pursley, Kahne, Sams and Kaeding early. On lap three, Kaeding went under Sams to take the final transfer. Sams battled back, but contact with Kaeding sent him into a 360 spin, bringing caution. Reutzel led Pursley, Kahne, Kaeding and Wood back to green. Wood used a slider on Kaeding to take the final transfer, and Marks was working on following him, when Kaeding came with an ill-fated slide job that sent the #0 pitside. On the restart, Wood attempted a low pass on Kahne in turn three and got into him and sideways. He was done and surrendered his transfer spot to Thorson. Yantis was running sixth on lap nine when he spun, bringing a final caution. Reutzel led Pursley, Kahne, Thorson and Carick back to green. Coming for the white, Thorson got by Kahne for third. Gorden, who started tail, slammed the cushion up to fifth, but ran out of laps.
A main (started): 1. 14, Corey Day (1); 2. 21L, Landon Brooks (8); 3. 17W, Shane Golobic (4); 4. 13, Tanner Holmes (2); 5. 77, Giovanni Scelzi (3); 6. 26, Justin Peck (6); 7. 2X, Justin Sanders (5); 8. 21, James McFadden (18); 9. 24, Rico Abreu (7); 10. 55, Kerry Madsen (10); 11. X1, Chance Grasty (16); 12. W, Kaleb Montgomery (11); 13. 87, Aaron Reutzel (21); 14. 88, Tanner Thorson (23); 15. 9, Daison Pursley (22); 16. 7, Seth Standley (15); 17. 7BC, Tyler Courtney (14); 18. 15, Nick Parker (20); 19. 2XM, Max Mittry (12); 20. 17GP, Brock Zearfoss (26, prov); 21. 42, Sye Lynch (17); 22. 19, Brent Marks (25, prov); 23. 46JR, Joel Myers Jr (9); 24. 45, Jake Morgan (19); 25. 33, Dylan Bloomfield (13); 26. 4, Kasey Kahne (24)
The 35-lapper paid $12,000 and saw Day leading Holmes, Golobic, G. Scelzi and Brooks early. Day got over the berm on lap 12, and surrendered the lead to Holmes. Day battled back, however, and drove around Holmes in turn four to lead lap 13. He was in traffic a circuit later, before Kahne came to a stop bringing the first yellow. A lap after going green, Zearfoss did a 360, slowing things again. Day led Holmes, Golobic, G. Scelzi and Brooks. Brooks assumed his Friday night cushion pounding again and passed Scelzi for fourth when the green fell again. On lap 18, he shot around Golobic into third. Bloomfield stopped with 15 to go, bringing another caution. Brooks used the restart to fly by Holmes into second and set his sights on the leader. They were into lapped traffic on lap 27 as Brooks closed the gap on Day. Golobic got by Holmes for third with six to go. With four to go, Courtney got over the backstretch berm and into the tractor tire, tipping over. He rejoined the field after a trip to the work area. The clean air was all Day needed to hold off Brooks, who settled for second. McFadden was the hard-charger.
