Jason Johnson Classic

World of Outlaws

39 cars

This was quite possibly the race of the year. The WoO has put on some exciting races this season, but it’s hard to top the drama, action, heartbreak and sentimentality that went into this one.

The Jason Johnson family always does a great job, starting with the delicious Jambalaya in the afternoon. Jax was behind the wheel of The Shop #41 for the anthem, and both cars were pacing the field.

The trip to Texarkana was a first for the majority of the WoO drivers to be sure and this was the series’ first ever visit.

The 39 cars were divided into two groups for qualifying with group one making up heats one and two, and group two comprising groups three and four. 28 of the 39 drivers circled the 1/3-mile under the previous track record. David Gravel (17th car out to time) set the standard overall and in the first group at 12.429 seconds. Tyler Courtney (14th car out) was second quick in the first group, followed by Brady Baker (3rd), Carson Macedo (18th) and Cole Macedo (10th). Buddy Kofoid (5th car out) was fastest in the second group and overall at 12.456 seconds. Brady Bacon (2nd), Sheldon Haudenschild (1st), Logan Schuchart (4th) and Bill Balog (9th) followed.

Heat one (started): 1. 2, David Gravel (1); 2. 2C, Cole Macedo (3); 3. 15, Donny Schatz (5); 4. 17, Spencer Bayston (6); 5. 51B, Joe B Miller (7) / 6. 79, Gage Montgomery (8); 7. 71, Brady Baker (2); 8. 7T, Landon Thompson (9); 9. 85, Colby Stubblefield (10); 10. 51, Steven Snyder Jr (4)

10-lap heats took the top five to the feature, and the top two to the Dash. Gravel led Baker, Co Macedo, Snyder and Bayston early. Bayston took fourth from Snyder on lap two. Co Macedo slid Baker in turn four on lap three to take second. Snyder got sideways and flipped inturn one with three laps down. Gravel took the outside on the double-file restart ahead of Co Macedo, Baker, Bayston, Schatz and Miller. Baker dropped the anchor, while Schatz jumped ahead of Bayston for third. Miller took the fifth and final transfer.

Schuchart led Axsom throughout. Marks took third from Bacon on lap two, but couldn’t quite get by Axsom. Pulkrabek snuck inside Crawley and couple of times in a bid for the final transfer, but came up short.

The 12-lapper took the top four to the feature. Baker led Lucius, Montgomery, Moore and Torgerson early. McCord spun at the halfway point. Baker chose the inside line on the restart, ahead of Lucius, Montgomery, Moore and Torgerson. Lucius shot to the front. In turn four, Montgomery tried to split Moore and Baker and made contact with the latter, sending Baker upside down. He was done, and Montgomery spun and went to the back. Now Lucius led Moore, Torgerson, and Hahn back to green. Hahn was rolling and gained third on lap eight and second with one to go.

The Jason Johnson Classic was fittingly 41 laps and paid $20,000 to win. It was a great one. Co Macedo led Haudenschild, Kofoid, Schuchart and Gravel early. One lap in, Haudenschild and Kofoid contacted, sending the latter into a spin. Kofoid went to the back, and carried some anger with him. Co Macedo chose the outside groove on the restart, and Schuchart followed him by Haudenschild into second. Crouch lost brakes on lap seven, slowing and bringing out another caution. Co Macedo took the inside groove over Schuchart, Haudenschild, Gravel, Ca Macedo and Schatz. Gravel shot by Haud into third on that restart. Ca Macedo used the low side to pass Haud for fourth on lap nine. Meanwhile, Kofoid had surged into the top ten. Co Macedo started lapping cars on the 16th lap. The lead five stayed the same for several laps, while eyes were on Kofoid’s advance. On lap 27, Schuchart who had been right on the leaders tail, but a slider on Co Macedo to take the point. Gravel followed him into second. On lap 28, Kofoid passed Haud to complete his first goal from the back and enter the top five. Ca Macedo quietly moved into third. On lap 30, Williamson contacted with Schatz, sending the latter in a spin and Williamson to the work area. The restart saw Schuchart choose the inside line ahead of Gravel, Ca Macedo, Kofoid, who had taken fourth, and Co Macedo. On the restart, Ca Macedo surged into the lead but that was negated by a six-car pileup involving Balog, Bayston, Williamson, Miller, Courtney and Moore. Meanwhile, Kofoid developed a flattening right rear, just as it looked like he was poised to go from the rear to the win. He tried to continue, nonetheless. Once green, Haud moved back into the top five, and then took fourth from Kofoid. Co Macedo got by Kofoid for fifth on lap 34. With six to go, disaster struck for the leader. When Moore spun in turn one, Schuchart tried to go between him and the wall, climbed the concrete and turned over. It was open red time. The Kofoid crew tried to patch his tire as best they could. Now Gravel assumed the lead, ahead of Ca Macedo, Haudenschild, Co Macedo and Torgerson, who started on the tail. Ca Macedo, driving the Jason Johnson Racing #41 was the sentimental favorite and stayed all over Gravel. With three to go, he bid for the lead, and with two to go, snuck by, squeezing between Gravel and the turn four wall, going on to the win. The crowd went nuts. Kofoid held onto fifth on a flat tire. Torgerson was the hard-charger.
